The Allen House definitely existed in the Cincinnati, Ohio area. I was there in about 1854 or 1955. I read that the place went from being an orphanage to being a home for troubled teen girls and that recently there has been talk of renovating the place for a senior citizens home. I would like to go back and visit this house to examine my own memories of the Allen House that I seem to have from my young childhood days. can anyone give me the address for the Allen House?
Also, does anyone have any memories of their own time there? I have some disturbing memories but am not sure if I am correct. thank you, Carly

Here is what I recently found. In the Cincinnati Enquirer July 11, 1998, an article about a debate on the house. Someone wanted to purchase it and make it into a senior citizen's center. The facility apparently was an orphanage in the 1950's; then a home for troubled youth and then I know not what. I have contacted a writer for the Cincinnati Post newspaper: David Wecker, he wrote an article on a man. Wayne Couch, who resides in Denver, Colorado, who was there in the 1960's and looking for his family. I have been unable to reach Wayne Couch. There are several Couch names in their phone directory in Colorado, but none for a Wayne. David Wecker wrote a few words about the Allen House in his article; but I can not find it, as the newspaper's internet search link will not let me go earlier than 1999. The Allen House is in the Price Hill neighborhood of Hamilton County, apparently just renovated and worth over $1 million, though it was owned by Hamilton County and exchanged hands for care of children at $1 per transaction in the 50's and 60's. I am up against a brick wall on this place. I am concerned because I believe that I was seriously abused there in the early 1950's and want to confirm this belief. It was a bad place for me and I want to review the history. I am going to visit there in October to see if I can track down any information and also to try to clear my head on some of the abuse issues. I have had some flash backs of that time in my life and am doubting the reality of them.
Anyway, I am sure there has to be records. I believe that charges may have officially been made against the facility for sexual abuse, but can not access the information from here. I am in Texas now. I plan to go to the local university newspaper and check their newspaper history today so will let you know if I find anything. This is the link to the article I was aboe to get from the Cincinnati Enquirer. You can log on and see what is there and a picture of the house as it is today, or was in 1998.

I hope this is helpful. Please keep me informed of any information you are able to get. Blessings, Carol

thanks for the info.......my husband does not have fond memories of Allen House either......he has not said as of yet what they were but when he saw Allen House on the screen he said he did not have fond memories there. Maybe I will ask him today what he meant.

I came across this site trying to find information also on how to get non-identifying information on adoptions in Ohio.....I know there is a way of doing it but not sure if you have to fill out a form or how to do it. I know if you want identifying info born after Jan 1, 1964 it has to be both parties having signed release forms. and then you have to pay $60...just trying to get around that.......because if the other party didnt sign then you paid Ohio $60 for nothing and I dont think that is fair. They should refund the money if there is no record on file until the get something for you.

keep us posted

I will be interested to hear what your husband says about the Allen House.
I know nothing about adoption process, but am quite interested in that information as well. There were 6 of us girls; three of us are in touch; one was adopted at birth, one is deceased and the other one is somewhere out west, I think.
Good luck to you in your searches. Carol

Allen House was operated by the Children's Services Section of the then Hamilton County Welfare Department. It is now called the Department of Human Services and listed under Hamilton County, Cincinnati, Ohio.

From the period that I know, 1970-1980, Allen House was a temporary emergency shelter for abused and neglected children. Approximately 700 children each year stayed at Allen House until they were placed in foster homes, group homes, returned to parents, etc. Most children stayed at Allen House for no more than two to three weeks.

All records on the children were (are?) held by the now called "Hamilton County Department of Human Services." Each child had a case worker from the County who supervised the child's placement.

Thanks for the information. I am seeking information on what went on there in the mid 1950's, but appreciate what you sent to me. I will try to visit the Allen House in October to verify its existence, still, and to see if what I remember matches with what is still there.
Blessings, Carol

In 1987, the agency became the Hamilton County Department of Human Services. We changed to our present name in July 2001 to reflect a change throughout the state in which the Ohio Bureau of Employment Services merged with the then-called Ohio Department of Human Services. It is now called, Hamilton County Department of Job and Family Services. This is their newest website info:

Thanks for the current status and information. I am looking for historical comments on the Allen House during the 1950's and 1960's. . Specifically, I need to know about the sex abuse scandal there which is noted in the Cincinnati Post as well as the Cincinnati Enquirer, uncovered and addressed by a local politician.
thanks, Carol
