Surnames: Dent, Mattox
My great great grandmother was Sallie A. Dent b. 23 February 1804, in Maryland; d. 21 April 1879, in Franklin County, Virginia. She was married to my great great grandfather Samuel Gabriel Mattox. I am trying to go back further in her line. The only information I have is that her father was Thomas Dent. Could someone please help? Any information would be appreciated.

I have some of Sallie's info, but mostly on the Mattox side. I go back to Abt. 1735 on the Mattox side. Believe I have photo of Sallie and Samuel Gabriel

Yes I've found listings for Nathan Mattox and Rebecca. I've seen deeds in Franklin Co., VA showing properties that were bounded by Nathan's land.near present-day Rt. 40 around Union Hall, VA.
Rebecca was a dau. of Nathan who married a Bolling. Through this line one can go back to Pochantos & John Rolfe.

Look for Michael Mattox (or as Maddox) as possibly father of Sallie. He is the only one of that surname to receive a Commonwealth land grant in Franklin County. His grant was for land on what was called Muddy fork of "Chesnut Creek" [not "Chestnut Creek"] It was on the southern end of Chestnut Mountain, in southwestern Franklin County, and near to the line with Henry County. One Samuel Dent was a near neighbor of Mattox'. Good bet he is her father. Good hunting !
