This is my husband's first cousin, 7 times removed, so not real close...but I found the story so interesting, I had to post for other researchers. If you've heard of Aaron Porter, the Bear Hunter, in Mahoning County, Ohio, this is his first cousin. The son of John Porter, Jr., this John Porter's story follows and the link to the painting is at the end. Very cool! Katie

CAPTAIN JOHN M. PORTER "SQUIRE JACK"

One of the early mine operators in the Eckhart-Frosrburg area was Capt. John M. Porter (1783-1863) whose portrait (painted by the celebrated artist, Frank Blackwell Mayer, of Baltimore, Md.) hangs in the National Gallery at Washington, D. C.. Winning his captaincy in the War of 1812, "Squire Jack," as he was known, opened an mine on his farm soon after the war. The first Porters to settle in Allegany County were John Porter (1737-1810) and Moses Porter (1735-1794) who came from Baltimore County in 1765. The brothers were close friends of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, Maryland, and participated in the Revolutionary War in Captain Paxton's Pennsylvania Bedford County Militia. The brothers also helped survey the Mason-Dixon line between Maryland and Pennsylvania. "Squire Jack" was the son of John Porter (1737-1810) and married Catherine Glissan (1786-1846). They were the parents of three boys, two girls and probably two others. The portrait of Captain Porter was done by Mayer during a visit to the Porter Farm which had the euphonious name of "Rose Meadow" from the profusion of wild roses which grew there. The picture was exhibited the Paris and London Exhibitions under the title of "American Independence," and won prizes at both places. It is owned by the U. S. Government and hangs in the National (Mellon) Gallery of Art.
