We'll find out who he is John. I'm guessing that he might of been one of Alfred's sons. Speaking of Alfred, did you know he also lived up in Elkhart at one time? I found that yesterday. I thought that his brother Thomas Edward was the only up there.
Your cuz,
Brian

Hi John,
I found Charles L. Smead in the 1900 Allen county census in Cedar Creek township, born July 1878. He is living with his father, John Smead. John Smead was born Oct 1850 and the census says that his father was born in Vermont and mother was born in Ohio. I guess that we can conclude that Charles L. Smead was the grandson of our GGG grandparents, John Milton Smead and Rachael Hatfield.
Your cousin,
Brian

Hello Sandie,
Please see the reply I wrote to John. If you are indeed a decendant of Charles Louis Smead and if this is the same one, then yes, we are indeed cousins. Feel free to e-mail me at bsmead@gte.net

It does appear that we are cousins. I don't have the other names you mentioned. How far back does your Smead line go?

My father's name is Robert D Smead born 10/21/22 Allen Co. IN. Father Charles L Smead. Mother Leah Neuhauser. Dad knows of one uncle named Walter and a cousin John here. Where are you from? Dad's family's from Leo, In. Leah was born Amish and of course left the faith when she married grandpa. We don't know where the Smead's were from origionally, or much in the way of history. Dad thinks his father was Catholic. Charles died when my dad was 7 yrs---so that would make his death about 1929. Would love to swap info. I live in Woodburn---if you're not from here, it's about 9 miles from the home place.

I do have some information that I think you will be interested in, if you don't already have it. Charles L. is listed in the 1900 Allen Co. census as the son of John and Catherine Smead. Brothers and Sisters of Charles L. include John F., Mary E.,and Marguarite. John H. And Catherine are listed as the godparents of my grandfather John L. Smead's baptismal records. And yes, they were Catholic.

John H.'s father was John Milton Smead of Fort Wayne, IN. John Milton is also the father of my GG Grandfather Edward C. Smead. Hello cousin.

I have a web site on myfamily.com that has a lot of Smead and Smead related information. If you are interested I will send you an invitation to the site. My emal address is jsmeadsprint@earthlink.net

Cousin Sandie,
I can bet money that our fathers knew each other. My father was Charles Virgil Smead b: 1925 in Fort Wayne, went to South High. His parents were Clifford and Fern Smead, both also born in Fort Wayne. I live in Terre Haute now but I get to Fort Wayne about 4 times a year to clean up our cemetery. John earlier message) and I share the same GG grandfather, Edward Smead, who was the brother of your great grandfather. Your GG grandfather was John Milton Smead, born 1809 in Vermont, married to Rachel Hatfield, daughter of Thomas Hatfield in Washington township, Allen county, in 1840. Both of them are buried in Hatfield cemetery which is on Washington Center Road about a 1/2 mile west of Lima Road. Please accept Johns invitation to his family site. A lot of people have put a lot of good things there.
