My great grandfather was Jefferson Randolph "Soapy" Smith, the infamous confidence man of Colorado and Alaska (1878-1898). I am writing the true life history. I have much of his personal effects, including his roulette table, original grave marker, 100's of letters, and personal items. I am looking for relatives of those he knew, conned, gang members, etc.

Hi,
We must be cousins because Soapy is my great grandfather also–on my mother's side of the family. I believe that my mother and your father were brother and sister. Guess what...I bumped into Frank Reid' s great grandson. I will try to find his address and phone number if it would help you with your book.
Please contact me by my e-mail address and I will give you my phone number and address then.
Good luck,
Tad Brunton

Tad, though I'm unfamiliar with "Soapy" Smith, I'm hoping Frank Reid connects to my family. My mother's grandfather was George Reid b. 1858 d. 1899. The family story is he was killed in a gunfight over a woman he was accused of having an affair with. My aunt (who died in 1986 in her mid nineties) once told me she remembered her Uncle Frank Reid, but pushed for details, this side of the family was one that wasn't spoken of. So its also a major brick wall as far as family history. If you were pleased to meet Frank Reid's family, maybe George's are important, too? I would love to hear from you. Mimi.

Hello Mimi, We are very interested in meeting the Reid descendants. My daughter was the first Smith to talk to a Reid relative on July 4, 1998 in Skagway, Alaska where Soapy and Reid shot it out. I am publishing the biography on Soapy that is due out 2008. You might wish to visit the Friends of Soapy Smith website at www.soapysmith.net

My father now deceased, mentioned how his father and uncle were selling newspapers on a corner in Juneau,Alaska in the 1890's. They were chased away by Soapy Smith. Also he was chased out of a mining town on the Kenai Peninsula,(Hope) about 25 miles Southeast of the present city of Anchorage just before he showed up on Skagway.
