I am also interested in Carbon Co Itailians and wondered if many of them came from the same area in Italy? My MONTORO's came from Serra d'Aiello, Cosenza, Calabria, Italy and my ALBO from Grimaldi a near by town. They settled in Helper.and worked for the railroad.

Battista & Luisa Aragone/Aragona Mele/Melo family, Carbon County

Surnames: Mele, Melo, Aragone, Aragona
My husbands grandparents were from San Giovanni in Fiore, Calabria in Italy. Grandfather, Battista Mele, later changed his last name to Melo. Grandmother, Luisa Aragone/Aragona Mele/Melo.
Battista originally came to Sunnyside, where he and Luisa had 7 children. Only two of those 7 are still living. They later moved to Spring Glenn.
The 5 children who have passed on were Mary,Sam, Angelo, Joe and John.
At one time Battista and Luisa sold goat milk and cheese.
I have heard a story that Battista was accused of murder of a sheepherder who worked for him, but was later cleared. Would love any info about this story, or any other info or stories that might be out there.
Anything would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Cindy

My relatives ALSO came from San Giovanni in Fiore, Calabria, Italy, and worked in the coal mines in Sunnyside, Utah. Their last name was OLIVETO -- Sam, Salvatore, and Frank. Perhaps we are somehow related, or our ancestors knew each other.
I am also trying to research their story. This was back in the teens and 1920s, and it's hard to find information, and I'd appreciate any you might have.
I have found an excellent history of Italians in Utah. Here is the link: http://historytogo.utah.gov/italianita.html

Hello Robert,
My apologies for not getting back to you sooner. It has been a hectic year and I just found your reply.
It is very possible that you are related to my husband Frank.
His grandfather, Battista Mele/Melo came to Utah and lived in Sunnyside Ut. He and his family later moved to Spring Glenn Ut. Battista had a cousin, Salvatore Mele Sr., who also came from San Giovanni en Fiore. He lived down the road from Battista and his family. Salvatore married Rosina Oliveto July 16, 1921 in Price.
I would be so happy to hear from you and I can explain the name change (Mele/Melo), as well as share any info I might have that would be useful to you. Email me and I will be glad to write back.
