Swan and Johanna Widlon lived in and around Anacortes, Washington (Skagit County) from about 1880 to 1925. I'm looking for any information on their lives.

The "Skagit County Washington Index to Funeral Home Records 1908-1994" published by Skagit Valley Genealogical Society, lists Johanna Widlon d. 1924 age 85 yrs. The Cemetery is not listed but Evans Funeral Home is listed as having made the arrangements. Of course they are no longer around but if you would like to persue further information, you might consider contacting Kern Funeral Home. I believe they have the longest history in this area. There was no listing for Swan so I would guess that he died prior to 1908.

Good Luck

Thank you very much for your research effort. I think I remember seeing that Swan Widlon's last name was mistakenly spelled "Wedlund" in at least one record (perhaps it was in the Grand View Cemetery index). I believe he died in 1933. I did find an obituary in the Anacortes newspaper, but neglected to get a copy of it. The cemetary index listed above has a record of his burial, but the grave is unmarked.

I went back and checked under "Wedlund" and sure enough, there it was "d. 1933". I also found out that Evans Funderal Home is STILL in business after all, they just weren't listed in the yellow pages. You can contact them directly at (360) 293-3311 and they should be able to fill in the exact dates of death and any living relatives etc. If you'd like to post back to this group with the exact date of death, I'd be happy to see if I can find an obituary in the Skagit Herald.

I did check with our local newspaper "The Skagit Herald" for obits for both Johanna and Swan but I did not see anything listed. For more in depth information, you would do well to contact the Skagit Valley Genealogical Society http://xanadu.ncia.com/~svgs/

They have infinately more resources than I can offer you and they are in a much better position to be able to fulfill your requests.

Repost of an earlier e-mail:

I did get a copy of Swan's death certificate from the state of Washington. His date of death is listed as October 9, 1933. The name on the certificate is "Swan Wedlund". Why there was the mix-up in spelling is a mystery to me. I'd really like to get the article from the Anacortes newspaper on his death, also the obituary for his wife, Johanna Helander Widlon, who died December 26, 1924.

Also, I have a rather poor copy of a very interesting article from the Guemes Beachcomber newspaper, dated September 9, 1916, which gives a detailed account of the rather lavish 50th wedding aniversary party that was given in Swan and Johanna's honor. I would really like to get a better copy of this story, if you have any access to the archives of that publication.

Thanks again for all your help ...

I did a google search of my maiden name and found this message board. I have a very old copy of our Wedlund family tree which lists Swan & Johanna Widlon. I am a descendent of Hokin Widlon (later Wedlund) who appears to be a brother of Swan. His son Axel (b. 4-29-87) was my grandfather, my father was Arnold. I grew up in Ashland Wisconsin.

My wife (Nina Laree Kraut)is the gggrandaughter of John Wedlund through her father Ogden Wedlund Kraut. John was the brother of Swan and Hokin Wedlund (Widlon.) Nina's ggrandmother was Ida Mae Wedlund (daughter of John and Esther Ann Freguson). Ida died in 1978 at the age of 93. Do you have information on the family preceeding John, Hokin an Swan? Is the family tree information still available?
