I am looking for information on the John Cozens family. John married Mary Wiley in 1838. I do not have his parents names but his mother was born in Virginia and his father in Maryland (Via Ohio census) John and Mary's son was John Leroy Cozens, married to Martha E. Hand in Starke Co IN. I would appreciate any help. Marilyn

I may be related to these Cozens also. It appears that John (b ca 1815) and Mary Cozens, had a son William Cozens who married a girl named Permelia/Piriba/Phoebe. Also John had sons Richard and Elton Cozens. All in the 1870 Fed. census in Starke Co., IN. William Cozens had a daughter Emma Rae Cozens b in Starke Co, IN in 1874. do you have more information? Thanks a lot.

My information is limited on the Cozens line before John Cozens. I have John Cozens born in 1815 marrying Mary Wiley born April 16, 1820. The only children I know of them having are John Leroy Cozens my great grandfather. He married Martha Elizabeth Hand in Stark Co IN. John was born in 1846 and Elizabeth in 1853. John Cozens (1815) and Mary Wiley Cozens cared for thier grandchildren for some time while their parents, John Leroy Cozens and Elizabeth Garretson Cozens were moving or possibly in a divorce. Listed in the 1880 census in Indiana they have John age 65 and Mary age 60 with grandson Elton 16, Cora Eva, and William. This Elton was born in 1865 and died Feb 5, 1925. Cora was born about 1871 and William (my grandfather) was born 1873. John was a farmer with his birthplace being Maryland and Mary birth place being Virginia. With the similar names etc we would seem to be talking the same family. I am glad to have additional family to check. I would be glad to share information. Marilyn

Elton was my g-grandfather. He had 3 children, Arthur, Mina, Myrtle. According to one Starke County Ind. census record Elton is listed as a grandson of John and Mary. The same census shows Cora Eva as a granddaughter also living with John and Mary. According to Elton's death certificate, Elton's father's name was Leander. The informant on the cert was Mina Cozens/Belanger (Elton's daughter). The only Leander I've found was in Pennsylvania and would have had to father Elton at age 12? I have not yet found a link to the Penna. Cozens.
I have some other history that a John Cozens was the first Cozens to settle in Starke County OHIO, where Elton was supposedly born. One Ohio census shows Elton living there and claiming to have been born there. Yet the Starke County INDIANA census show Elton as having been born in Indiana. All other names and ages on the census are identical so it is doubtful that we're talking about two Eltons. Are you confused yet?

I see Permelia listed on the census, and the age could be appropriate for her to be a wife, but there is no relationship shown. Do you have other info showing Permelia to be a wife in that household?

Am responding to Ken Penske's and Marilyn's messages. I responded about 10 days ago but cant find a record of it and my computer crashed. Anyway we all seem to be depending on the 1870 and 1880 census in Stark County, IN. You are right; I assumed reationships that were not stated in the 1870 census. I am guessing that the 27 year-old William Cozens (so b. ca 1843) is the father of Emma Rae Cozens.she was b in 1874 in Starke Co, IN. In 1900 Fed census she is Emma Herrod, her father b in Oh, but mother b in TN. I cannot give a source Wiliam's wife being Pariba Cozens, sorry, something from my sister. Marilyn- if Elizabeth Cozens was b. in 1851/1853 and Elton was b. in 1864 we have a very young mother. Do you have more info on Cora Eva or the younger Wiliam Cozens b in 1873. Thanks.

I guess there was some confusion on the 1880 census. It listed Elton as a grandchild but we do not believe this to be so. Cora and William were the children of John Leroy and Martha Elizabeth Hand Cozens. They divorced and went their separate ways, John L to Texas and Martha (Mattie) to Kansas. She took their youngest son Charles born 6-6-1876 with her. Later William (Willie, my grandfather) born 12-26-1872 went to be with his mother in Kansas and Cora born 12- 1871 went to Oklahoma. WE also believe John Leroy was born in 1851. The children we believe to be of John and Mary Wiley Cozens are Cynthia 1841, William 1843, Sarah 1845, Mary 1848 John leroy 1851, Permila 1853, Richard 1856 and Elton 1864. John and Mary Wiley Cozens were found in the 1870 Census of Railroad Indiana.
John 53 farmer, Mary 50 William 27, Permila 17, Richard 14 and Elton 6.
I do have additional information on William Sterry Cozens born Dec 26, 1872/3 died Aug 25, 1934 in Cunningham, Ks married to Lulu Alcenia Crosley. They had 9 children, Edwin, Melvin, Ralph, Wilmer, Reba (my mom) Phebe, Doris, Lu and Richard. These are my grandparents so have th line on from them. Cora died Jan 25, 1949 in Comanche OK. She married possibly two times. Not sure of first husband with whom I think her children descend. Second marriage was to Harry Newell. She had 5 children, Maude, Will, Mabel, Clara and Marshall. Marilyn, thank you so much. I have also received an e-mail from Betty Cozens. She had some excellent info on my William H. Cozens b. ca 1842-43. So Permilia is his sister, not wife. William H. is in 1880 census with wife Pariba, dau. Rositta and my g-grandmpather Emma. Her daughter, Ethel Herrod went out to KS from IN and m in 1911 in Sedgwick City, near Wichita, KS. Any Cozens in this area? a longshot. Anyway you have given me so much help. Have photo of Emma Rae Cozens. could we all exchange photos? God bless. and speaking of which is there a religious affiliation with these families? Finally there is a civil war vetern William H. Cozens that fits my guy in Union Ohio 12th Ohio regiment Cavalry. He survived.

Search for COYNS in Ohio between 1850 and 1880. You sould see John, Mary, EA (Ezra?), Permelia, and more.

It appears there was a misspelling of the name Cozens. All the names and dates fit with John and Mary of the 1870 census.
