I'm looking for informaton on a Mathew Gay from Sylvester Ga. He served in the civil war and was with the 50th Ga regiment company h 1st sgt.Any information would be greatly appreciated

In the 1860 GA census, there are two Matthew Gays in Emanuel Co. One in 59th Dist p. 431 has slaves, as does the Richard and Absolom Gay of that 59th Dist. The younger? Matthew lives in Canoochee with Mitchel, Richard, John W. and Absolom Gay, all without slaves.

There is a marriage on record in Emmanuel County GA for Mathew Gay and Susannah Johnson, dated 6 Dec 1859.

Matthew Alexander Gay (CSA) married Josephine Giles, daughter of John W. Giles. Also found is a record of a Matthew Gay marrying a Martha Deal in Bulloch Co., Ga. earlier 3/10/1804(?) He probably had two different wives(?) Matthew Alexander Gay was born in 1841. he was wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness. He was in Company H, 50th Regiment, Georgia Infantry. Matthew Gay was appointed lst Sgt. February 1, 1864. The wounds to his head and arm permanently disabled him. he was wounded May 6, 1864. In Emanuel Co., Ga. 1841-1857, lists Appraisement of Estates 1 Negro ($550) - 510 Acres ($300) - 622 Acres ($100 - 767 Acres ($50) - 195 Acres ($55) Value of Estate - $ 2,240.00. he states he had four children.
He was the son of the Revolutionary Soldier Henry Simon Gay born 1799 in Bulloch Co., Ga. Henry Simon Gay died 1857 and burial at Bethesadia Cemetery.
Simon Gay drew land as a Rev. Soldier in Bulloch Co., Ga. in 1820 Land Lottery, Drawing Lot # 488, 12th District of present Brooks Co., Ga. His wife Anne of that county. Henry Simon Gay Jr. grewup in Bulloch Co., Ga. and lived there until 1825. His wife, Jane, was born in Georgia; maiden name unkn. Simon Gay and family moved to Lowndes Co., Ga. about 1825-30 and is shown in Heads of Families in Lowndes Co., Ga. Simon Gay and family settled in 12th Land District in the portion that was made into Brooks Co., Ga. in 1858. About ten years after they moved to the 8th Land District of Thomas County, Ga. and in the creation of Colquitt Co., Ga. it was cut out of Thomas Co., and became Colquitt Co., Ga. property. Mr. Gay died there about 1857, and was buried at Sardis Church. He married Jane/Mary Gay (she is shown in the 1860 Census of Colquitt Ga at age 60, born in Georgia and alsoliving in the home where Matthew Gay age 20 years, farm laborer; Mary J. Gay age 1`7; b. Ga. and James W. Bloodsworth age 13; b. Ga.
I have lots of information on other siblings of Matthew Gays and their lineages.
Henry Simon Gay RS born - 1799 was the son of Henry Gay III - born abt. 1690 in Isle of Wight, Va. Died Nov. 28, 1793 and his wife was Mary Gay. I have lots of information on him too.
Henry Gay III was the son of: Henery H. Gay II born Virginia and died at Isle of Wight Co., Virginia Feb. 3, 1735/6. I have lots of information on this family too.
Henry H. Gay II was the son of: Henery Gay and Joanne. Henery was born in England circa 1628 and he died between 1668-1688 in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia. I have lots of information on him too.

Anne , My grandmothers maiden name was Josephine Gay. Her parents were John H Gay and Lena (Williams) Gay. I have John H. Gay's obit (my great grandfather). He left 118 survivors including a daughter named Nancy Mercer. You can contact me at ling805@bellsouth.net

to ann west, john h (henry is my paternal great grandfather . he an leanna williams had 7 or 8 children and yes nancy was one of the daughters . david hiram gay the youngest child of john henry was my father's father. i have just recently put together and finally gotten in contact with my dad's family who would be the children of david hiram gay and stella which was his 2nd wife after my grandmother gussie c williams gay and david hiram divorced when my dad david william gay was young. hope this helps let me know if you need anything else.
