My name is Michele Kozel and my mother told me that my father died before I was born on Oct.24,1963. I am unsure of this and am looking for some answers. His name was Joseph Kozel and we lived in Chicago IL. If you have any information, please contact me.

Michele,
Currently I cannot help you in you search for family ties, but as I was doing a little bit of web surfing on my own geneology, I came across your name and found it quite interesting to find another Michele Kozel who is about the same age as I am and with the same spelling! Growing up, my family were the only Kozel's that I knew and our name was not that common!

I do not know how far you have come in your family search, but I can tell you what little I know of my Kozel roots. My father's name is John Kozel and his parent's were John Kozel and Helen Bednar. They were origionaly from Perriopolis, Pa. They moved to Warren, Ohio in the early 1950's as did a large number of people from their home town. The jobs were becoming scarce in the coal mining areas and there were many more jobs available in Ohio. My father's father passed away when he was a teenager, so I never knew my grandfather or his family as they did not keep close contact after his death. I do know that mother's name was Anna Kozel and that they came to the US from Slovakia. My grandfather had two brothers, one I do not know the name and the other is vincent Kozel. I believe he moved to Michigan.

Even if this does not help, it is alway interesting to hear from others with the same surname, and who knows, there may be a link somewhere! I am very interested in preserving my family history and try to do research whenever the time allows!

Hope to hear from you,
Shelley Kozel Trapp

My Kozels were in Ohio, Michigan and Rochester, and originally from Russian Poland or Ukraine, but I have search ideas for you.

Are you looking for an ancestor or a living relative? There is more than one Vincent Kozel in the Soc Sec Death Index, although only one shows New York:

KOZEL SR, VINCENT 21 Feb 1916 Dec
1970 54 (not specified) (none
specified) New York 127-01-2210

If you are looking or living relatives, there is more than one listed at veromi.net from Albany NY, but you can try to pick the appropriate listing by age and then use a phone directory site such as http://411.com to try to get contact information.

The following page gives tools and hints about finding people through public records sites and search engines:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thecohens/...

If he was born before 1930, then look for parents and siblings in free census records at FamilySearch and Heritage Quest, links and information about free census resources are at

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thecohens/...

If your Vincent has passed away, then his obituary might be very helpful, links to obituary resources are also on the above page.
