I have lists of graves for the following cemetaries:

Wakkerstroom, Barberton, Belfast, Helvetia, Watervalboven & Chrissiesmeer. Some photos of some graves are available.

Although these are not complete, I will gladly supply the info.

Hi Lindsay.

This is a bit of a long shot, but you couldn't supply me with information on any graves for the following regiments:

Highland Light Infantry
Gordon Highlanders
Black Watch (or Royal Highlanders)
Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)

I'm working on a research project on Scottish regiments in the Boer War and these are the four regiments I'm working on at the moment.

This is a bit much to ask, I know, and if it's too much for you to check I would be grateful if you can just check the Highland Light Infantry.

If you have any photos I would be extremely grateful to see them.

Thanks,

David McNay

I do have some records for a couple of graves:

Belfast (South Africa): These are graves of 1st Gordon Highlanders:
Pte. G. Smith. no. 3285. 12/01/1900
Pte. A. Brotherston. No. 6442. 08/01/1901
Pte. J. Smith. No. 4137. 19/11/1900
Pte. T. Taylor. No. 4127. 13/11/1900
Pte. J. Fraser. No. 6984. 05/01/1901.

Waterval Boven: 1st Gordon Highlanders (1st Batt):
Pte. J. Findlay. No. 2031. 13/08/1901

I do know that the Scottish Rifles had a campsite near the town of Greylingstad. The campsite is on a hillside and you can clearly see the layout of the camp and the tracks made by wagons etc. I have visited the site, I do not know if anyone from this regiment is buried at Greylingstad, but will go and check it out the next time I am in South Africa.

I still need to go through a few photos etc and will get back to you.

Carol, Quite by accident I stumbled on the fact that the South African Genealogical Society has a gravestones project where they are trying to record and photograph all cemeteries in South Africa, including unlisted farm cemeteries and, presumably, Boer War cemeteries. It is all voluntary and far from complete but it might be worth looking at for anyone trying to trace gravestones in South Africa.

Hi - thanks so much for that reply
since I posted my request I've become involved in the project and have done a few farm graves for them - and in getting involved i found that the whole project was started by a 2nd cousin of mine who I'm not sure I've even met - who's mother was my God Mother (My mothers cousin) - I just love genealogy and all the synchronicity and meeting all these wonderful people. like you
