Just found out this week that I am descended from the "notorious" outlaw, Boone Helm. He was referred to "as a murderer and cannibal"!

Can anyone tell me about him? All I've been able to find out about him is that he was "lynched" in 1864 in Virginia City, Montana.

I am desperate to learn more about this "outlaw".

ROD..READ YOUR MSG AS WELL AS MARYANN'S REPLY
I HAVE QUITE A BIT OF INFORMATION ON BOONE AS
HE AND MY GRANDFATHER TRAVELED WEST WITH 3 OF
MY GRANDFATHERS BROTHERS. SEVERAL BOOKS HAVE
BEEN WRITTEN ABOUT HIM, ONE OF WHICH I HAVE.
THE AUTHOR MAY STILL BE ALIVE WHO HAS A WEALTH OF INFORMATION BUT IS HESITANT TO RELEASE IT "UNTIL IMMEDIATE DESCENTS ARE NO
LONGER LIVING", WHICH DOES NOT DO US A LOT
OF GOOD.

Marilyn: I believe I'm one of Boone's Canadian descendents. My brother has done quite a bit of geneology work on the family line, tracking back to Virginia and confederates such as General Benjamin Hardin Helm...If you get a sec, could you get back to me on the books you refer to. I have seen some reference to boone in one of the many accounts of vigilante justice in old Montana.

I have some data on Boone Helm. He was born in Kentucky in 1828. His family moved to Missouri, where he decided that he wished to go farther west, i.e. to California on his own. A friend promised to go with him, but changed his mind. Boone stabbed his friend to death and was caught by a posse. His behavior in jail prompted the court to put him in a mental hospital. After a relatively short time, he escaped and made his way to California. Boone killed several men there and fled to Canada. The province in which he spent a lot of time was British Columbia. Boone continued to be a lawbreaker. Several times he came back from wilderness trips and his companion would be missing. He always made some excuse, on one occasion claiming that the man with him had committed suicide. Boone had eaten several men who had been with him.
Boone was sentenced to death in British Columbia. He escaped and went back across the border into the U.S. It was there that he linked up with several other lawbreakers. They were caught and hung near Virginia City, Montana.
