Searching for my grandfather, Michael YANCURA, YANKURA, JANCURA, JANKURA and my grandmother, Mary LESONDAK. Grandfather born in 1875 and grandmother born in 1878. Had a son named John, born 1900, when they immigrated to USA in 1901 and 1903.

Any information would be much appreciated.

My grandfather, Michael Yankura, immigrated to the USA in 1901 and settled in Fayette County, PA. My grandmother immigrated, along with their first child, John, in 1903. As far as I have been able to determine, they were all born in the town of L'ubica, Slovakia.

Any chance they are related to you Yancura?

There was a JOHN YANCURA who was a very good friend of my dad's.My dad was George Hriczik changed from Hricik.
The Hricik's were from Strazske and Topolany Slovakia.
Don't know what year my grandfather came to US but my
dad came with his mom (Susan Chismar)and brother Michael
in 1913.They settled in southeastern Ohio.I have pics
of John Yancura. In fact he was my Godfather.
Where were your Yancura's from and where did they
settle?

Marge......

My grandparents had no relatives of any kind outside of PA. Franklly, aMy grandfather had one brother but he remained in Slovakia. He is probably dead by now and I don't know whether he had any children . Frankly, I don't think there is very much of a possibility that your Yancura's and my grandfather are related. Sorry.

John

I don't really know where my godfather was from.
My dad was from Topolany and may have had family
in Strazske as that was where his father was born.
If you find any of your Yancura's living in
Ohio>Pleasant City,Waldhoning,Cambridge,Buffalo,
area then we're on to something.
What bigger town or city is near your Yancura's
hometown in Slovakia?

Marge,

My grandfather was John Yancura. If you have a picture we might be able to figure out if it is the same one! I get conflicting information as to wether or not he was from Russia or Slovakia. He lived in Pittsburgh, Pa., and I believe he came to the US around 1912! Please stay in touch until we find out if it's the same person.

Respectfully,

Charles E. Yancura

Charles,
Yancura or Yankura spelings are just about impossible in Slovakia. Yancura is americanized spelling of Janc'ura (soft "c") Slovak surname. I suspect that spelling change was made to preserve correct pronunciation. Not sure as to why it would be further changed to Yankura. I do not know if Janc'ura family considered themself Rusyns as opposed to Russians. Rusyn is a distinct group of people that is present in southern Poland, eastern Slovakia and western Ukraine.

I have been trying to locate members of my Mother's family. She believes the spelling is either Yankora or Yankura or could have started with a J. She has always believed that she was Sylvian and there had been some talk about somewhere way back, the family had been cousins of a king. As a matter of fact, supposedly a family member had been contacted some years back by a firm as to a small inheritance that was due a living family member which was collected on. My Mother was raised in foster homes, so it has been very hard to find out anything. Can you give me any direction? Thank you.
