Our ancestor, Louis Javillon dit Lafeuillade, came from Limoges, Limousin to Detroit (Michigan USA) in 1712 and died there September 9, 1754. I am searching for the names of his parents. He was born c1690 in France and took a wife while in Detroit c1716. I understand that the name Javillon is quite rare in France. The Lafeuillade portion of the name is a nom de guerre.

Pat - I, too, am looking for Louis' parents. Spent Friday evening at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City checking parish records from Limoges - St. Michel parish. The closest thing I found was a Louis "Gaviol", but as I looked at that name on other listings I think it might have been Gariol instead. Keep in touch and I'll let you know if I have any success.

A cousin in our community spent a year in France and found time to study all of the church records within the diocese of Limoges to no avail. We were then not aware of the Javillon spelling, however, and she was looking for Chavignon and/or Davignon as it was spelled in the Detroit Ste Anne's records. It is certainly Javillon in Jette but I wonder by what authority. The 8-31-1712 notarial record, engage to Detroit, spelled it Javillon, and it was spelled that way on sale of his house on Ile Carillon. The nom-de-guerre Lafeuillade came from a previous generation I feel sure as those military units came before he was born (circa 1690). I worked on that last summer at a military museum in Paris. TELL ME I am so curious to know, from which child are you a descendant ???

I come through Marie Angelique who married Michel Antoine Quesnel. How about you?

We come from Joseph, the 8th child born 3-17-1731 (therefore not in Jette) who married Marie Anne Lemelin in Detroit April 22, 1754. During the 1800s the surname became Lafayette, an American attempt to spell the French dit name of Lafeuillade. The Javillon dropped out of use with Joseph's son, Pierre. Most of these descendants still live in the Detroit area, some in Saginaw. In modern times, of course, others have spread all over the country. Your Quesnel descendants of Marie Angelique are very well documented. I wish we could hear from any modern-day descendants of Louis, child #1, and Felicite, child #7. The other four died in childhood. My Lafeuillade Lafayette gedcom is on rootsweb which I invite you to visit. Also I wish you the best of luck in your search in Salt Lake City.

Neither the godmother nor the godfather have any family or blood relationship to the child born to the parents of the Huron Nation. At the time of this baptism the Huron fort was located just to the southwest of Fort Pontchartrain au Detroit, where Louis Javillon dit Lafeuillade was stationed as a soldier. Nothing further is known of either of the Huron parents except that they named their child, Louis, in honor of this soldier.

Do you have a copy of the baptism record for Louis? If so, would you be so kind and share it with me? Thank you in advance.
