I am looking for information on the family of James Seery born in Ireland about 1828. I have no information on his parents or siblings. He came to the US as a young man planning to hire out to fight in the war but it was over when he got here. He settled in Indiana and married Nancy Ellen Wood who was born about 1845. They had three children I know of: Kathryn, John, and Mary (there may have been others). Kathryn was born about 1875, John May 1877 and Mary later. Mary married Patrick Dugan. They also lived in Indiana close to Bedford. The family is listed in the 1880 census at Washington, Owen, Indiana. John (my grandfather) listed his birthplace as Ramona, Owen County Indiana. If anyone has more information on any members of this family please e-mail me direct or post a message on this board. I would especially like to know about James Seery's parents. Thanks!

My ggrandfather was James Seery, born in NY in the late 1800's. I know he had a brother who stayed in NY and was a high ranking man on the police force. My James moved to Colorado and finally to Minnesota where he settled in St. Paul and was killed in the line of duty as a firefighter in 1941. Don't know if there is a connection, but will keep in touch if something comes up. I can be directly contacted at rjjdo@msn.com.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I don't see a connection unless your James was a son of my James and brother to my grandfather John. I think the family stayed in Indiana except John moved to Carthage, Missouri around 1900. James was born in Ireland in 1828. The family is listed in the 1880 census in Indiana: Wife Nancy Ellen Wood born 1845, Dau.Kathryn born 1875, John born 1877. I know there was also a sister named Mary who lived and died in Indiana, she was married to Patrick Dugan. I don't know if there were other siblings. Happy hunting for your James.

I am looking for siblings of Michael and Thomas Seery sons of Michael Seery and Anne Cowley

These siblings would have been born circa 1820-1840
and you mention a James born 1828
Can you share some further information about the James you mention. I am looking for a John Seery in particular

Terry

I have very little information about James Seery except he and his family were in Washington, Owen, Indiana during the 1880 census. He was born in Ireland in 1828 (I don't have a clue to his parents names). Family stories say he came to the US to hire out to fight a war, whichever side would hire him, but when he got here the war was about over so he settled in Indiana. He married Nancy Ellen Wood who was born in Indiana in 1845. In 1880 he was listed as a day laborer, he had two children, Katherine age 5 and John (my grandfather) age 3. I knew John's sister Mary but don't know if she was born after 1880. I believe the family stayed in Indiana, I know there were some relatives in Bedford we visited one time but I am not sure how they were related. I have considered the possibility that Katherine was Mary Katherine. Mary married an Irishman named Pat Dugan. They lived in Indiana until they died. I haven't been able to find any record of them but I visited them in Indiana in 1950. John married young and had two children but the wife and children died in an epidemic and he left the state and moved to Cartage, MO where he married my grandmother in the early 1900s. He was a foreman in a stone quarry and later moved to Batesville, AR to be forman at a quarry in Phieffer, AR. His marriage certificate to grandmother said he was born in Ramona, Owen County Indiana May 23, 1977. Grandfather never talked about his family but family stories say they were Catholic and he read the bible through by the time he was 12 and converted to Protestant. He was a very bright man. Let me know if you have infor. on any of these people. I have hit a brick wall. Thanks!

Thanks you for your reply
The Thomas and Michael Seery I referred were born in Roscommon & Westmeath and emmigrated to Australia in 1860/61 where they both had large families. In Thomas's will he left land to both his SON John and his BROTHER John.
I cannot establish whether John was actually in Australia or who were Michael and Thomas's siblings (children of Michael Seery and Anne Cowley of Dublin)
I am aware of one James Seery born circa 1830 who also emmigrated to Australia and who was hanged in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia in 1870 for the murder of a chinese man in the Victorian goldfields.
So you see I can fill in detail of two main Seery families in Australia but I am unaware of the movement of the Seery's throughout the US
Sorry I could not be of more assistance!

Thank you for the information, it was interesting. I feel there could be some connection further back in Ireland but until I can find out the names of James Seery's parents in Ireland I can't tell. It seems most of the Seerys came from Westmeath and Rosecommon. Good luck on your search.
