Robert Jameson (Manufacturer) 1832 - 1908. The plant Gerbera Jamesonii was named after him. Robert's son, Reyburn, was my father's (Philip Reyburn 1st April 1911 - 23 August 1987)father. Robert Jameson was born in Scotland? in 1832 at Kilmarnok? Robert married Catherine Walton Spencer and had nine children – Henry Bentleigh, Charles Spencer, Annie, Frank Walton, Reyburn, baby Stanley (died young), Sydney Glen, Effie Curtis, Florence. I am trying to work out this Robert Jameson's father's name. I also would like to know if this Robert Jameson (born 1832) was a brother of Leander Starr Jameson. Any one with knowledge??
........................................................
APOLOGIES: During my search to discover if this Robert Jameson and Leander Starr Jameson were brothers, a message was posted unintentionally by my wife, which read "My husband is Peter Reyburn Jameson (1946- ) son of Philip Reyburn Jameson (1911-1987) who was the son of Robert Jameson (1832?-1908) who was a brother of Charles Spencer Jameson. (Up to here is correct although 1832 should perhaps read 1840).

TO CLARIFY: The following should NOT have read - this Robert Jameson (1832?-1987) was a son of Robert William Jameson (1805-1868)who was a playwright and poet and a writer to the Signet in Edinburgh. This Robert William Jameson 1805-1868 was perhaps a son of Thomas Jameson (a wealthy shipowner merchant and burgess of the city of Edinburgh).

Hi - we must be related. Robert Jameson's son Charles Spencer Jameson, is my maternal grandfather's father. I can't help you with your questions but would appreciate it if you could please let me know if you get anywhere with your search into his ancestory. Thanks,Anne (nee Mayne)

Hi, Thanks for your reply. At this point though I disagree that Robert Jameson born 1832 (my great great grandfather) is related to the poet/playwright Robert William Jameson and Leander Starr Jameson.
Growing up, we were always told that we weren't related to the Jamesons of the "Jameson Raid". Also all the information I have researched to date does not seem to link these Jamesons either in that there are specific and separate references to Robert William Jameson, the Professor/playwright/poet and Robert Jameson "the botanist"/Gerbera Jamesonii, my great great grandfather. Information from my family is that Robert Jameson was born in Scotland in 1832 at Kilmarnok and attached to 79th Cameron Highlanders. As a youth, he had to accompany his father’s regiment. He stayed for 8 years in Gibraltar and after that for 4 years in Canada. His parents had chosen a military career for him. However, he changed his mind and eventually he landed in Durban in 1856.
I am having difficulty finding my great great grandfather's ancestory however and would be happy to be corrected if you are 100% sure about your information regarding the Shetland Island origin and the playwright connection.

Robert William Jameson and his son Leander Starr Jameson are quite separate from the botanist Robert Jameson of Kilmarnock (1832-1908).

Robert William Jameson and his son Leander Starr Jameson are from a long-established, successful family in Leith, who probably have Shetland origins.

For details of the Leith family see the Shetland database

I wish you all successful sesrching in 2012.

Brian you may know the answer to my big question who was Robert Jameson's father (that is the Robert Jameson of Kilmarnock 1832-1908). I was under the impression that this Robert and Leander Starr were brothers! Thanks for any info you may be able to share with me.

Scottish OPRs show no Robert Jameson/Jamieson born in Kilmarnock in 1832. The only Robert Jameson born in 1832 was in Shetland.
But in the Kilmarnock OPR there is an interesting entry copied from a Family Bible as follows:
William Jamieson, Dyer, and Mary Becket, his wife had a first child, Robert Jamieson, born in Kilmarnock on 4 September 1833.
Also, second child Margaret Jamieson born in Kilmarnock 10 June 1835; Third child James Jamieson born in Kilmarnock 9 May 1838; and fourth child William Jamieson born in Kilmarnock 8 January 1840.

Could this be your Robert Jameson? The different spellings of Jameson/Jamieson are probably not very significant. So one question is how reliable is the 1832 birth date for your Robert Jameson?

In the meantime, I'll try to look for this family in the 1841 and 1851 census returns.

Previous posts as per my family ties regarding the Jameson playwright have been unintentionally misleading at this point in time as I haven't seen any proof of this as yet -

Hi, firstly, could you confirm that you met my sister, Elizabeth Thallon (Liz) (nee Jameson) many years ago in Brisbane.? She was a nurse at Wesley Hospital Brisbane and through a patient at the time, Liz met you in St Lucia Brisbane whereby she found out that you were exploring the Jameson family tree. Do you remember her?

This is my family history as per my relationship to your family as I know it -

My grandfather, Reyburn Jameson (Architect 1876-1949), was a son of Robert Jameson (Manufacturer presumably 1832 -1908). This Robert Jameson had to follow his father’s regiment. And as you said we believe he stayed for 8 years in Gibraltar and after that 4 years in Canada. His parents had chosen a military career for him but he changed his mind and landed in Durban in 1856. A few years later he started his manufacturing company Jameson’s Jam. He also may have had the Gerbra Jamesonii named after him?

My grandfather, Reyburn Jameson (1876-1949) married Mabel Elizabeth Walker (spinster) on 3rd June 1903 daughter of Herbert Walker (Engineer & Architect). They married at St Andrew's Church, in the City of Nottingham, in the County of Nottingham, England. : Reyburn was a son of Robert Jameson (1832-1908) who was married to Kathryn Walton Spencer but I need to yet see a certificate of dates.

Robert & Catherine Jameson (nee Spencer) had 9 children - Henry Bentleigh, Charles Spencer, Annie, Frank Walton, Reyburn, baby Stanley (died young), Sydney Glen, Effie Curtis, Florence.

Reyburn and Mabel Jameson (nee Walker) had three children (two daughters & 1 son). Daughters Nora Mayfield (nee Jameson) & Sybil Trezise (nee Jameson) were born in Cape Colony, South Africa and the son, my father, Philip Reyburn Jameson (1911-1987) was born in North Vancouver, Canada. Philip (1911-1987) became an Oil Company Executive in Brisbane, Australia. Of these three children, Philip Reyburn Jameson (1911-1987) was my father.

It appears from the above that we are related as Reyburn Jameson (of my family) & Charles Spencer Jameson (in your family) were brothers.
My main interest is to find out who was the father of Robert Jameson and if these dates are correct(1832-1908) ??? This is proving very difficult but I will keep trying!

Thanks for the information and any clarification that the dates for Robert Jameson of 1832-1908 can be proven correct or incorrect.

He is definitely the Robert Jameson (Manufacturer who formed a company in South Africa known as Jameson's Jam). These goods were exported to Canada and Australia and were well known throughout South Africa.

I have the Death Certificate of Reyburn Jameson 1876 - 1949 in my possession and his father's name is Robert Jameson (Manufacturer) but no dates for him.

My main interest is to find out the name of this Robert Jameson's father.

Peter Reyburn Jameson
