Family Tree Maker- Import and Export between 2006 and 2011

I still use 2006 on my XP machine. I now have a laptop with WIN7 64 bit and want to use 2011. But the files from the 2011 version - must be backward compatible to my 2006 XP machine. Will the new software allow this? Does it work? Does it take all the 2011 information with the export to 2006?

mable,

Please check the Help, About, on your XP PC from within Family Tree Maker and verify that it isn't Version 16.

Version 2011 will Export a GEDCOM back to Version 16. SO your images in 2011 will NOT be included.

Hello
The version via About is 16.0.350.

You mention a GEDCOM. Will 2011 not export back to the FTW file? I just want to use the FTW files between the two version. I am taking a laptop on trip and want to update along the way with my win7 laptop and then reload 16 when I get back home.

mable,

NO, Version 2011 will NOT export a Family Tree Maker file back to Version 16. The structure of the database is very different.

Why not use Version 2011 on both computers?

I realize I should use the new version, but I want to try it and see if I like. I really like v16 (I have had family tree back when it was Bunderbund). And wonder if I really want to switch. But there is no trial version of 2011,so I am hesitant to spend money on the new version that I may not like.

So I trying to have the both worlds. I appreciate your comments and knowledge.

mable,

In this specific case, Version 2011 and Version 16, you can't have the best of both worlds. They are two very different versions.

At some point in time, you will have problems with Version 16. I am guessing that you already have that, in that Version 16 won't run on your new, Windows 7 PC. You haven't said that, but that is what I am guessing.

Hello Again.

I have no problems with Version 16 on my XP box. I have not and was not planning on loading V16 on the Win7 box - knowing that the product is 6 years old and probably would not run on Win7.

I am (smiling) one of those people, if the software works - leave it alone. My XP is my main computer. The Win7 is my new computer and it is used for travel and trying new programs. I am not a techie type person so I don't want have to refigure how things work every year or every updated product. And I really like V16, this works very well.

I may end up with FTM 2011 on both computers but I do all this change very slowly.

I may wait till I find the product with a free trial version or inexpensive version.

I appreciate 'talking' with you.

mable,

I understand your wanting to stay with Version 16. That's OK. Just know that you will NOT be able to take your file from Version 2011 back to Version 16 with the images that may be in Version 2011.

In Version 16, images were included within the Family File. With Version 2011, the Images are NOT included in your Family File but are in a < Media > folder associated and links to the images in that folder to your family file.

You can go from Old to New, but in this specific case, you will be missing the Images going from new to old.

Personally I like FTM 2006 over the new one and if I can just find a download disc my tech would download 2006 to my laptop.
