i am trying to confirm the line of rosalie h monroe, who married thomas nicholls johnson (went by 'nick').
i know that she was raised by arvie & jean(johnson)marshall, but not why.
from the info i have found, i know that her mother (edna irene hadley monroe) died when rosalie was very young. i assume she was given to the marshalls because of that. on the 1930 census she is listed as their adopted daughter.
her marriage info lists her adoptive parents, her obituary lists edna hadley & william henry monroe.

all information would be appreciated. thanks.
ps - was jean johnson marshall related to rosalie's husband?

Hi,

The adoption record may or may not state why Rosalie was given up for adoption. To find the adoption record you'll need to know where she was adopted. The "why" questions are the most difficult to answer.

I didn't find any other Census info for Rosalie, Edna or William.

Need to know where and when Jean was born to look her up in the Census. Successful Searching!

hello, and thank you. i don't know how i missed your reply. i abandoned this branch of my husband's tree, and am only now getting back to it.

i don't think there was a formal adoption, though there could very well have been. my hunch is that she (and possibly other children) were given to people to raise after the mother passed. it's fairly common in both branches of my husband's tree.

i've found much information on edna & william, though none with rosalie. as she was born only three years after a census, and her mother died a few years later, that doesn't surprise me. what i need is the 1920 census. who was she with at that time? the marshalls, or other family?

if anyone seeing this knows anything, i'd love to hear about it. if her birth parents were really william henry monroe, and edna irene hadley, there were quite a few siblings.

Hi,

I didn't find a Rosalie Monroe or Rosalie Marshall on the 1920 Census in Ancestry and FamilySearch. Successful Searching!

I went to Ancestry and put in William Henry Monroe on the public member trees. There were several of them that had William Henry Monroe/Martin. I looked at the 1910 census under Henry Martin born 1867. I came up with what I think is the family living in Idaho. They are going under Henry and Irene (which I believe is Edna's middle name). There are some children in common with the 1900 census for the family that you have on your tree. I then tried the same thing for 1920. Henry is now widowed and there is a Rosalie Martin. One other clue is that Henry's parents are consistently listed as being born in Virginia and New York. On the 1910 census there is a David Martin on the same page with parents born in Virginia and New York. Could this be your family?
