After banging my head against the preverbial Genealogy wall for the last few months I think I have found a break.
I recently discovered what a Melungeon is, and that I possibly am one.

Anyway, I am trying to find info on Lula Goins who had a daughter named Ellen M. Spears. I found the birth record. Ellen was born August 1926 in Lechter county, KY. I am guestimating that Lula would be around 20 something, so she was probably born around early 1900's.

I think maybe if Lula is a nickname, her real name may be Talulla.

Ellen evertually married my grandfather.

Please any help would be Greatly appreciated.

Walter (42) and Lulla Spears (37) are listed in the 1930 Letcher County, KY census, but do not have a daughter named Ellen or "M", and no child or theirs was born after 1922. That could be a census error. Both are from Tennessee, and all of their children except Johnie 14 were born in Tennessee.

Thank you. I have come across a few mistakes in my research like that. Perhaps you could answer a question. Doesn't a woman have to list her maiden name when giving birth? And thanks for the help. I did used to have access to the census, now I have to get a new membership.

These people lived in the country and the rules were different. The 1930 members of this family were Walter 42, Lulla 37, Buela 18, Cleo 15, Johnie 14, Jimmie 12, Paralee 11, Willie 8--and then no more. My suspicion would be that the enumerator left off the rest of the children--I have several cases of that. One issue is that Walter and Lulla cannot be found in the 1920 index, suggesting that this might be a second marriage for one or both, or possibly he is using a different first name.

David - thanks for your reply. Actually I have it now. My cousin who is the daughter of "Johnny" emailed me today. Found her on another site.

Walter is the middle name he went by. His name is John Walter Spears Sr.
and Lula Elizabeth Goins. Who I have listed as Elizabeth Gowins on the KY record of Johnny's birth.
