I have found conflicting information about the birthplace of Andrew Liddell, husband of Jean Johnson, and father of James Simpson Liddell. In several DAR volumes, women who trace their ancestry to Andrew, routinely say "born in Ireland". Also in the book, "Liddell's Record" edited by Nathaniel Hughes, the editor says Andrew was born in Ireland. However, he doesn't footnote the source. In Ancestry.com pedigrees, I see listed New Castle, either Delaware or Maryland.

Does anyone know where I can find an original source for the birthplace of Andrew Liddell?

Andrew was born in Maryland. Authenication should be very easy. I remember seeing copies of the records myself in the Mississippi State Archives in Jackson. Seems like it was a census. The Liddells were living in western Maryland at the time and when the frontier collapsed following Gen. Braddock's defeat, our family and many more cut out for a safer land, namely Old 96 District in western South Carolina. You may know that people moved in bunches then. Advantages: mutual support, farms wearing out at the same time, intermarried families, known reputations over everyone in the group, etc.

Really, if you can get a copy of the Thompson book you will not need to do anything more, except for about three generations earlier than James, born 17112. (Call any Liddells in the Hammond LA area and ask about ithe book. I have a copy but it is in storage in Jackson. Sorry. the book is about 1.5 inches thick and is very good.)

The Very Earliest Liddell of Our Line (B. 1686)

This comes from the Mormon www.familysearch.org page and takes our line back as far as it probably will ever go.

??? Liddell, male, born 1686 in Scotland, wife unknown. Father of James Liddell, born 1712 (The record says Anderson, SC, but I don't think this is correct) who died 1796 in Abbeville Dist. SC. Also father of John Liddell, born about 1720, in scotland and died probably in Annapolis, MD. Also father of Moses Liddell, born about 1722 in Scotland and died about 1768 in Abbeville SC.

James Liddell had at least seven sons who all served in the Continental Army, Andrew earliest of all (I think) with Francis Marion in the Charleston SC swamps. George, his brother may have been with Marion as well.

AND THAT SETTLES THE ORIGINS OF OUR LINES. PERIOD. UNLESS, OF COURSE, SOME NEW "OLD" RECORDS CAN TAKE US BACK BEFORE ??? LIDDELL, BORN 1686.
