I am the granddaughter of Sina Catherine Killen McKneely. I am looking for some information about her mother (my Great Grandmother Gilley and my Great Grandfather. I did not know my grandfather Leonard Riece McKneely. My grandmother said that he had died in 1936. I had seen a black and white photograph of him in a cowboy outfit. Grandmom said he worked on a ranch in Texas for a while. If you have any information for Sina McKneely or any information on her brothers or sisters, please email me. Thanks.

Recently I have looked at the Interent and census reports to see what info I could find about your Sina Catherine (Katherine) Killen. Here is what I found.

Sina was born 5/24/1888 in Alleghany Co., N.C. and died 3/9/1978 possibly in Mercer Co., W. Va. - or Nicholas Co., W. Va. Her father was James Robert Killen, born 1855 (where?) and her mother was Gilly Mary Ann Moxley, born 3/11/1862.

Sina (supposedly - from other researchers) married Jim Brown circa 1905 and they had no children. This marriage ended shortly. Sina then married Taylor Smith circa 1912-13 and they had son George Smith (b. 1914).. Taylor died 1916 (why ?). Then Sina married Reece Leonard McKneeley circa 1917 and they had the following children: Lenna & Lita (twins, b. 1919), Eddie (1922), Reece (1924-25), Elsie (1927), Eula (1930), Violet (1932), and Earnestine (1935). Possibly Eddie died before the 1940 census. Likewise, maybe Lita was married before 1940 too. Posssibly Leonard adopted George Smith.(b. 1914).

I don't know where Leonard and Sina married, but by 1919 they had moved to Princeton, Mercer Co., W. Va. The children were all born there. Leonard died 1936 and on the 1940 census Sina and the children were still in Mercer Co.

Reece Leonard McKneeley was born 8/9/1876 in Hampton, Ga. and died 2/6/1936 in Mercer Co. (I saw some reports that said he died 6/2/1936, but the death certificate, signed by a doctor said he died 2/6/1936.) His parents were Susie Barnes and Edward McKneeley.

Sometime between Leonard's death (1936) and Sina's death in 1978, Sina lived someplace in Penn. and got a Social Security card. It appears after a few years in Penn., she moved back to Mercer (or Nicholas) Co., W. Va. For about $40 you can go to your local Social Security office and request a copy of Sina's original Soc. Sec. application, which should give you some more info about her.

I hope I havenot confused you too much, even if it is a year later that your posting . Bob Eddings - no relation.

Gilley died in a TB hospital in Virginia, Abington I think it was and was buried there. Mom was a niece of Sina, Sina also bought her own gravemarker before it was needed! LOL. Mom loved her Aunt Sina.

Dear Ms. Spencer:

I had saw the picture where she was beside her headstone while she was still alive. She was bent down on one knee and had her right arm on the headstone. I thought it was strange that she would have her picture taken holding onto her head stone. My mother and her sister Lita were the first set of twins born to her and my grandfather Riece. I know he died in 1936 from pneumonia. When I was about nine years old, we had went to Beckley West Virginia and saw where my grandfather, Leona and Leslie (another set of twins) and my grandmother's baby Arleen who was the twin of Ernestine born in 1934 were buried underneath a big oak tree. My mother and I did not get along, so, my grandmother Sina was always there for me. She is buried in Nicholas County at Craigsville cemetery along with her daughter Lita and also her grandson who was my youngest brother Gary. When my grandmother died, I had just got over the flu and had a relapse when I found out from my sister that she had died. I miss her so much. I understand why your mother loved her. My grandmother Sina did get to meet her great granddaughter (my daughter). Sina had a one bedroom trailer that she lived in before she died. Sina McKneely was one great lady.
