I would sugguest that those of you who are searching for information on the Conlee family, consult the research done by Jim Morgan of Sun City West. Arizona. Mr. Morgan has compiled a most complete Conlee lineage starting with Isaac and Mary Conlee, through their children: John H., William, Susanah (Denton) Daniel, Isaac, James Preston, Enoch, Joseph, Reuben, and Levi Preston. This extarordinary work is based on the individual lines of the Conlee children, which has been submitted to him now living descendents. These records compose of what they had gathered from their family records of their descendents and taking it to this generation.

I descend from Elizabeth daughter of John H. and Hessy (Esther) Hodgson Conlee. She married Thompson Smith. I recently was able to douctment and prove the Hodgson family taking them back several generations in Sussex Co. DE.

As for Isaac and Mary ____ Conlee. Those of us who have been working on them for many years have not come up with an infinitive answer as to their origans. They are first found in
Guilford Co.;NC 7 Nov 1783 where Isaac first bought his land. He sold this land to William Stratton 15 Sept 1792. At that time this was Rockingham Co.

This is SPUCLATION: However all indication point that Mary, Isaac's wife, may have been a Stratton. The Stratton family was closely associated to that of the Levi Preston family of Cumberland NJ.

We are always looking for new leads into this family, and every lead is followed.

John Tucker:

I went though all the Conlee index's looking for a Phil.(Philip) Conlee. There was only one and he was born to late to be the man in the 1860 Morgan Co. ILL census.

You stated that all were born in Mass do you mean Massachusetts or Miss for Mississippi??

If they were born in Massachusetts, this would be a problem.
as our Conlee's seem to have headed west and south. However we do not know fwhere Isaac Conlee was born or who his family was. There has been a lot of speculation on this but so far no answers. We do know that there was other Conley-Conlee etc. families in New England area. However we have never been able to attach to them.

The fact that there is a George Whitfield Conlee in TX 1880 is more than likely of the Isaac and Mary ___ Conlee line. I am assuming that you have his lineage back.

I know there there are still unidentifed lines out their. Perhaps Jim Morgan can answer your question about your your Francis Marion Conlee. I am sure he would appreciate your information. Please contact me under my E mail address for Jim's finformation. < seamore@earthlink.net. >

I just found a family tree that my mother researched in 1963, The information that I have came from an oral history told by to my great aunt Elizabeth Jacobs Foltz. She makes reference that there is a booklet that tells the family history that was passed down through Elizabeth Jane Conlee.b1852.
It's listed Isaac Conlee - Came to South Carolina with French Huguenots to escape religous prosecution Fought in revoluntionary waar then moved to Kentucky after his marriage to Sarah Preston. There farm is where Mammoth cave is now. Their son Isaac Henderson Conlee born 1820 Shippingport Ky came to Harrison Co. Indiana to farm Seven Springs Farm, married Sarra Elizabeth Birdwell in 1850.

Hope this is infor that is useful and thank you for your reference.

Gloria,
Thank you! !!!! My email is hetrick@connerprairie.org ( I check this one most often) or at my husband's email at crhetrick@yahoo.com
I can help you on the last name of Jane Birdwell. Her last name is Rogers - She is the daughter of Thomas Wesley Rogersb/ 1772 married in 1793 Sarah Matheny from and/or Hampshire Co Va. . He moved to Elizabeth IN, Harrison County Thomas and Jane are buried in the Rogers Campground burial ground see Rootsweb.com under Thomas Rogers/Sarah Matheny). The Rogers Campground burial grounds in Elizabeth. Thomas Rogers donated the ground for the burial grounds.

There are indications that Thomas Wesley Rogers sr was also from Hampshire co. Va./W.VA. ( My mother's notes say Harpers Ferry which would have been Federicks County prior to 1754). Any documentation stops there. The Matheny line is very well documented and on Rootsweb.

What I have left of my mother's work (she and my father both eventually suffered from possible alzhiemers and much has disappeared) is from a Nell Conlee Gray to Elizabeth Jacobs Foltz. In this account she mentions a booklet or book that documents the family line. I do not have a copy and have written to all of Elizabeth Jacobs Foltz's grandchildren asking they have copies or have heard of. I have been communticating with Jan Davenport who has studied the Rogers line. She has copy of an old book that recounts the Birdwell family line. She is sending me a copy but we do not know if the books are one and the same. Have you heard anything about such a book?

On an interesting bit of family folklore - My mother's notes (She was Mary Elizabeth Jacobs - William Henderson - Wendel Jacobs) and in the information from Nell Conlee Gray - the Jane Rogers line is supposedly descended from John Matthew Rogers, the first martyr under Bloody Mary in 1555, and one of the translators of Tyndale Bible. The Nell Conlee account states that the records from 1772 to 1555 were destroyed in a fire. Supposedly this particular book mentions our descendancy from John. It would be interesting to try to trace the linage backwards from John Rogers family in England.

Via the internet it "looks" like Robert Birdwell is descendent from Moses Birdwell, Strafford Va, who is the son of George, also of Strafford. I have not had any verification yet.
