Contry of origin for the Ganoe name?

I have found conflicting information on the origin of the Ganoe name. Growing up I was told it was a German name. Later I received information that the name was French, or Germanic French (whatever that is). Can any Ganoe out there shed some light?

Thank you for the help.

I was under the same impression until a family researcher went to Germany to look into the Champion/ Ganoe lines. It seems both families were French, but left France during the mid 1700's because of their religion. They were not Catholic and France at this time was a Catholic country! The French government was hanging protestants. They left France and traveled to a small town called Keltz, Prussia, now Germany.
Hope this helps.

There is a book you will want to find, called "Gano Family USA" by Howard LeMaster .
In this book he gives a lot of historical info from France to the US. If you want to write directly to me, I can give you a web-site with a lot of very detailed info.
