Hello 2nd cousin! First, your grandfather's name was Perry Artemus Lineberry, not Arthur. His sister, Etta, was my grandmother. Please contact me directly as follows:

steve.gillett@cox.net

I have the news articles from the Mattoon Journal-Gazette reporting the accident that killed your grandfather in January of 1946 as well as his obit.

Perry Artemus Lineberry was born 4/18/1885. the third child and first male child of Dewitt Monroe Lineberry and Rachael Leander Dobbs. He married Florence Mary Reed on 6/25/1905 and had seven children.

I can give you all sorts of data on your ancestry, particularly the Lineberry and Dobbs lines. What I don't have is data on Uncle Art's family. If you were around Mattoon back in the early1960's when Aunt Bertha, Uncle Orville, Uncle Bert and my grandma (Etta) died, we had a Lineberry family reunion nearly every year at the funerals. I probably met you if you were there.

Most of my data on the Lineberrys came from Aunt Bertha's grandson, Kenneth Easton. Also, Rose Lineberry, the grand-daugher-in-law of Uncle Orville has been doing genealogy research on the family. She's changed her email address and I've lost contact with her. I see that Jalene has responded to your message as well. She is descended from Uncle Bert, but is very young and never knew any of them.

I look forward to hearing from you and exchanging information.

Steve Gillett

Your list of siblings included "Matthew." He was known as Matt, but his name was Madison Euphronus Lineberry. He had one sister, Nora Etta Lineberry who died at age 4 months. These two siblings were borne by D. M. Lineberry's first wife, Isabella (Ibby) Evans who died 9/20/1879.

D. M. married my great-grandmother, Rachael Leander Dobbs on 9/12/1880. They had nine children: Bertha Lenore, Etta Esther, Perry Artemus (Art), Orville Monroe, Otis Iverness (died at age 7 years), William Wybert (Bert), Lester Earl (Jack), Dorothy Rozella (Dot), and Mima Opal.

Aunt Mima was the last to go. She died just over 10 years ago in Shelbyville at age 91.

I have several pictures that I can send you. There is one circa 1960 of the six brothers and sisters that made it to old age. I have one of Rachael and one of Abram Lineberry. Also obit on D. M. and on Rachael, plus other good stuff.

The story I was told about the Lineberrys is as follows:

Before the CIvil war, the youngest two sons of John Lineberry, Alfred and Abram, jointly owned a plantation in Randolph Co., NC. Abram (Dewitt Monroe's father) and his brother were not of the same mind regarding slavery. In 1854, anticipating the Civil War, Abram freed his slaves, gave his half of the plantation to his brother Alfred, and moved his family to Cumberland Co., Illinois, near Toledo.

You will see threads on this board regarding Jacob Lineberry and Mary Catherine Youngblood. They are the parents of John Lineberry and the grandparents of Alfred and Abram.

Uncle Art's mother was Rachael Leander Dobbs. Her parents were Nathan Carol Dobbs and Julia Ann Berry. Nathan was a Pvt, Company I, 5th Cavalry Regiment, Illinois Volunteers. Fought in the Civil War at the Battle and Siege of Vicksburg. His name is on a plaque in Illinois Memorial at Vicksburg battlefield. Enlisted 9/23/1861, mustered out 11/7/1864, Vicksburg, Miss. Julia was the daughter of Joseph Nelson Berry and a full blooded Indian, thus making your grandfather 1/8th Indian.

Nathan and Julia had 11 children including one set of twins and one set of triplets. Rachael Leander Dobbs was the twin of Perry Alexander Dobbs which may have something to do with your grandfather's name! When I lived in Mattoon in the 1950s and 1960s, the town was full of Dobbs and their descendents. I remember when I was in junior high school, I really liked this one girl. When I mentioned to my Mom that I wanted to ask her out, I was told to forget it, she was my cousin!

Hi

I hope this email is still good. My wife found this while looking for info on my grandfather Jack. I made the reunions (funerals) for a lot of the family in the 50's and 60's. I also have 16mm movies from the early fifties with uncle Orville, aunt Mime, aunt Etta, uncle Bert and others. I hope to get them put on a CD so I can share them.

My mother was Betty Jean Lineberry (Daniels), my uncle was Jack Dean Lineberry. My grandfather was Jack Earl (Lester) Lineberry.

Well, my emails have changed slightly. I now answer jaylene.owen at gmail.com. I would love any copies you have and any information you can share.

I am the granddaughter of Sherman Lineberry son to Bert Lineberry. I've been doing a lot of research as well as I know a few others have too. Recently the bug bite me again. In fact, right now I've been in Raleigh NC visiting the state archives for about a week.

Had some vacation and decided to get some updated documents on everything Lineberry from the 1880 and earlier. I've literally copied so much from the original wills and court documents. I plan on scanning these documents when I get home and get a chance so it might be a while but, they'll be available soon.
