Surnames: Gibson, Collins, Chavis
I am looking for the GIBSON family who probably came from Louisa Co., Va., and also NC to Scott Co., Va. I suspect they came from the line of Gibson Gibson and Hubbard Gibson, sons of Elizabeth CHAVIS--1680. A John COLLINS was also a close neighbor. Is this the beginning of the Melungeons? Could the CHAVIS [SHAVERS etc] have been "Portyghee" or whatever? Gibson Gibson family successfully proved to South Carolina Govt he was not African American but must have been dark skinned. His sons probably married into the Monacan Indian Tribe. Appreciate any help on this--pro or con

Chavis

I thought you asked about the possible source of the name and if it might be of Portuguese origin. I also thought the information I gave you might be of assistance. I guess it wasn't.

I didn't mean it as anything. It is what they "called themselves" below are just a few links to the almost hundred pages you will find. So do you know anything of the Elizabeth Chavis or however it was spelled that was in Virginia in 1680?
============

These people claimed that they were descended from a group of Portugese who had been shipwrecked or abandoned on the Atlantic coast. (Byron Stinson, "The Melungeons,"
American History Illustrated, November, 1973:41) The term they used was `Portyghee'.

The closest Portuguese name to Chavis would be Chaves, which means "keys" in english. It is pronounced as one syllable, not "Sha'vez, as in Spanish. p.s. while I am sure you don't mean it as such, most people consider the slang term you used for Portuguese as an insult.

CHAVIS SURNAME - NB married andrew evans(1788-1818) not andrew chavers.

JOANNE,
We may be looking for some of the same family. I have an Andrew Chavers who was married to Elizabeth Shoemake b. at Pee Dee River South Carolina.
Andrew was discharged from the Civil War for being "too dark".
We've always been told Native American but then I found out that some Chavers and Chavis are the same family. I've also found my Shoemakes listed in South Carolina as other free.
You can email me directly if you like.

Penny, please e-mail me privately at jinnyemk@aol.com. Your email isn't listed. Chavis is one of the prime Melungeon surnames along with Dial, Driggers, Mozingo, Cumbo, Sweat, Locust, Coffee, Oxendine and Nickens. I, too, have Melungeons in my family and am probably one myself.
