Chavers/Shiver/Chaivors--Melungeon? Sephardic? Black Dutch?

I am researching my great-great grandmother Louisa/Luvice/Levisa Chavers, Shiver, etc. Family history has it she was either Jewish and disowned for marrying outside her faith or was "Black Dutch." One family member had "Portuguese" noted for her. She was born approx. 1833 in GA or AL. She has proved imposible to trace. She married David Jackson Dorris/Dorries but no record of marriage found as yet. A photo of her shows her dark and exotic looking, but not Native American or African American in appearance--more gypsy. Any clues on her surname very appreciated. We tend to think she was Melungeon--not sure of a Sephardic connection but seems possible. Thanks,
Vicky

Hi Vicky,

It's been some time since we wrote. I wanted to point out the recent post I made on "Jewes" of Barbados. From the Parish records, Hotten lists "Jewes" there. One is a De Chavis. With the numerous changes in Chavis/Chavers/Chavous names, I wonder if Barbados might hold some clues.

Hi, In my family, we have a Louisa Chavis born around 1815 in Alabama. She lived in Drew County Arkansas until she died in Feb. 1985. My family lore has it that she was also Native American, I have done a mtdna test, (which Louisa is the oldest known ancester on my mother's line)and my results are her mtdna she passed on to me. We know nothing of her prior to her coming to Arkansas. If you would like to discuss Louisa and her dna results, that might explain her "exotic looks" email me back.

I am a direct descendant of Louisa Chavers (b. 1915 in MS and died in Drew County, AR). She had a daughter named Caroline (b. 1843) and I am descended from her. We know very little about her other than where she is buried (Mt. Pleasant AME Church in Monticello, AR).
I had my DNA tested, and I do have connections in the Caribbean, Jamaica specifically and one melungeon from appalacia. My took the test four weeks ago (he is Louisa descendant). I will know then whether or not my caribbean an melungeon connection are through him.

I forgot to ask you, What did the mtdna test indicate?

Surnames: Chavis, Hudspeth
My mtdna is L3f. I am descended from Louisa, through her daughter Temple Ann Chavis who married Lee Hudspeth in Monticello, Drew County, Arkansas. I look forward to having a chat about our Louisas.
