Bruce, is the surname for the family HODALEN, with BAKOS being Gjertrud's maiden surname?

Did the family change its surname to Johnson?

Do you need census information or birth/death dates or what--exactly what is the objective of your query?

Mary,

You are correct with the surnames. Ole changed his name to Johnson as did some of the other children. One of the children was married and changed their name to Dahl. I don't know what John & Gjertrud did with their name. I can't find out when they died, I am pretty certain it was in the Osseo/ Strum area. I also can't find them in the census.

I can give you more info if you need it.

Thanks, Bruce

Bruce, please post the following information:

1. The names of all the children you know of (I assume these are Ole's siblings).

2. Some sort of time frame. Should I be looking for them in 1870 or in 1930?

3. What is the oldest piece of "hard data" you have for this line? In other words, do you have Ole's birth date and place? If not, do you have his marriage date and place (and spouse name)? If not, do you have his death date and place?

4. From where did this family line immigrate?

5. Do you know anything about the family's occupation--were they farmers or merchants or what?

Mary,

Did you see the reply from Michael? That is the same family. Ole (1844-1919) & his wife Carrie (1855-1936) (Karen) moved to Havre, Montana. I also have a copy of the church register where they were married. I want to find out what happened to his parents John Estensen Hodalen & Gjertrud Ingebritsdatter Bakos. I would like to know when & where they died, and if they are in the 1860, 70 or 1880 census. I can't find newspapers that go back that far for the Strum and surrounding areas. I figure a newspaper might be my best bet to find out more about them.

Thanks,

Bruce

I may have come across another bit of information on Ole Johnson. I happened to notice that Isabelle Johnson had married my Samuel Hogue in Sparta, Monroe, WI. So I searched Monroe counties website and they have alot of census' online. Living with my family of Hogue's is an Ole Johnson born in Norway and is 15 years old. Could this by yours? It would explain how Isabelle and Samuel met.

Here is the link to the census

Hope it helps.

Hello from Norway.
Could John have an older brother, Ole? This Ole Estensen was brn 02.24.1799 in Tolga. He left for the US together with many others in 1852.

He was living in Dane Prairie Township Ottertail county MN. He was memeber of Swan Lake Lutherans church. I believe that he died between 1880 - 1890.

Thank you for any informations.
