Malachi GILMARTIN married Mary GAVIN circa 1830/1840 at Toomyvara, Tipperary County, Ireland. Children born were:Catherine(1846-1925) married John MOTEN (1847-1927)and resided at Roscrea, Tipperary County; Mary (1844-1924) married John Gowen; Margaret (1848-1907) married Thomas Gowen and resided Chenango County, New York, USA; Lancelot and Patrick who both moved to Syracuse, New York, USA; Michael who resided in Gutigerry, Ireland; Bridget who married Thomas McCrystal and moved to Providence, Rhode Island, USA; and a female who married Patrick CUMMINS and resided in Roscrea, Tipperary County, Ireland. I am a descendant of Patrick Gavin whose 2nd wife was Ellen Lynch. Patrick and his first wife (name unknown) had several sons; Patrick and Ellen had 2 sons, John and Malachi. John born in Borrisokane, Tipperary, Ireland. I have no info at this point re ancestor of Patrick. John baptized at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Borrisokane 27 Jun 1839. Sponsors were John Gavin and Mary Gavin.

Malachi is an unusual name; perhaps uncle and nephew.

Looking for Patrick Gavin who married Mary Heffernan.
Both are from Co. Tipperary. Patr. was born about 1828.
He settled in Warren County, IL where he died in 1893.
Trying ti find out town in Tipperary.

I found your posting from 1999 saying you are a relative of Patrick Gavin. He is my husband Mike's great-great grandfather and we are trying to do some find out more about him and what part of Ireland he came from. Patrick and Ellen had 4 children listed in the 1880 census including Malachi who is the father of John Edward, Mike's grandfather. Do you have any more info? Thanks much, Pat MacLean

I know this is a very old post but my family is related to the Gilmartins from Syracuse, New York. My great uncle John Hewitt came over with Michael Gilmartin on the SS Campania . They left on April 8,1900 from Queenstown . They gave their last address as Nenagh and were to stay with Denis Gilmartin and family on Schuyler Street in Syracuse .

I researched on this family many years ago. I can't make a definite relation between them. But they did attend the same funerals and were listed as cousins to my Gilmartins.

This is very interesting. The first names are the same but birthdates and spouses don't match. We have heard the name Letsom-Moten before. It is connected with French Hugenots. The spelling of Motan also looks French to me. An O'Meara relative in Ireland stated that our line is not directly related to any Letsom-Motens.

My furthest back ancestor was Michael Motan/Moten. He died ca 1890 in Tipperary Co., Ireland.
Michael, his son John and John's youngest son, PAtrick stayed on the same land from 1856 until the 1920s. This is according to the Griffiths Land Valuations and also death certificates and family knowledge. Michael had 3 known children,

1. Johanna (1840-24 Jan 1924 Templemore
married to John O'Meara

2. Ellen Moten (184101901+
married to William Kinnally

3. John Moten (1847-17 Apr 1927 at Roscrea, Tipperary Co.
married to Catherine Gilmartin (1845 Gutuigarry-1925 Roscrea)

My line descends through this John Moten.
