A iography of Arthur Schomburg born in Puerto Rico says that his mothers maiden name was Joseph and that she was born free in Frederiksted. That is not significant since she was born between 1848-1863. Her parents though were also born free. Any info on if and how he fits in with the other Frederiksted Josephs ?

Almost forgot! Mary JOSEPH's distinction of having been born free may have been mentioned in relation to the fact that slavery was not abolished in Puerto Rico (where she moved prior to Arthur's birth) until 1874, if my memory serves me correctly.

One person who I was told of as being related and acquainted with Casper Holstein was Mrs Fabio the mother of Dr Sanford Fabio Sr. I called and asked him how Holstein was related and he said through his grandmother Elisabeth Skelton Pretto. The Skeltons are mostly from Tortola. The biographies of Casper Holstein give his mother as Emily Holstein but don't say whether that is a married or maiden name. Assuming Casper Holstein was born Egbert Joseph and that Joseph was a surname it does not say whether it is his father or mothers surname. I notice Casper Holsteins business dealings with the de Chaberts which was also the family of Major Casper von Holsteins wife. I am theorizing that Casper was the Major's grandson. The de Chaberts have said that Casper Holstein was not related but that Christian von Holstein was so I'm wondering if Christian was Casper's uncle through a half brother.

SCHOMBURG's mother was Mary JOSEPH (born 1837 in St. Croix). Mary's father was Nathaniel JOSEPH; her grandfather was Nicholas JOSEPH. SCHOMBURG also had a sister by his mother named Dolores Diaz.

This information comes from the Library of Congress website's National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections (NUCMC).

SCHOMBURG is one of the subjects of "From These Shores" by Axel C. Hansen, M.D.

Grealdo Guirty, in one his books, indicated that Casper HOLSTEIN was born Egbert Joseph. I don't know if Joseph was meant in this case as a christian name or a surname. HOLSTEIN's sister was married to D. Hamilton JACKSON. HOLSTEIN is also one of the subjects of "From These Shores."

One of my gt. gt. gt. grandmothers was Rose JOSEPH, born in St. Croix in the 1780's, she was a slave who bought her freedom sometime during the first decade of the 18th century. She had 5 known children for a white man named BEHAGEN. I don't know if there is any connection to SCHOMBURG's family.

I notice in one of the African American 'Who is Who's that Gov. Charles Turnbull is listed as the son of John Wesley and Ruth (Skelton) Turnbull. Governor Turnbull wrote a biography of Casper Holstein. Dr Sanford Fabio says that he is related to Casper Holstein through the Skeltons. I wonder if Governor Turnbull is related to Casper Holstein.

My uncle, A.C. Hansen, used Governor Turnbull's biography of Casper HOLSTEIN in preparing the chapter on HOLSTEIN in his book "From These Shores."

Dr. Marilyn FRANCIS Krigger (UVI, St. Thomas Campus) is a descendant of the SKELTON family (from West End Tortola, BVI) through her mother, Mary Augusta SKELTON Francis. This branch of the SKELTONs is also descended from the slaves of Thomas and Mary Nottingham, who were freed by their masters in the late 1700's and given the master's estate in joint tenancy. I'll see if I can find out any information on this.

Miss Ruth THOMAS, now retired former Principal of Charlotte Amalie High School, would be very knowledgeable about this family as well.

Mary Augusta (May May) SKELTON Francis' parents were James Alfred and Lolita (FRASER) SKELTON. James Alfred's parents were Joseph and Susannah (???) SKELTON.

May May was raised by her paternal aunt, also Mary, in St. Thomas. The name Mary was passed down in the family to honor Mary (???) Hunt Nottingham, who with her (2nd?) husband, Thomas Nottingham, freed the ancestors of this branch of the SKELTON family in the late 1700's in Tortola, BVI.

While it is nice to see the wedding stat it refers to a modern wedding not to the parentage of Casper Holstein who was born in 1876
