I have a gggrandfather named John Heng that came from Heng Island. He was born In Norway around 1862 and later came to Paulina, IA. Do you have any info related to someone by this name? I'd be happy to share what I have found on history since he came to Iowa. Thanks!

WOW - 5 year old message, finally got read! i believe that john heng may
have been related to my side of the hengs, but someone who has traced the
hengs back to the 1700's is on this link -
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&...
try going there and then possibly e-mail to the following lori cherland
mccune at mcbears@tetontel.com . she apparently put this linkage together
and was fairly endepth. i remember my dad - marion heng who lived in
truman, mn, said there were some heng's in paulina who may have been cousins
of his, but i don't recall ever going there to see them. however, heng
island is real - it's on the map - and apparently the farm that's there is
named after it, which means "steep" in norweigin!

best wishes
bruce heng (from eirik and jacob heng's line!)

Thank you Bruce! I'm impressed with the info that Lori has done and will contact her. I heard John was a farmer, so that fits in with the other history I've read about the Hengs. I'll let you know what I find out.
Happy Holidays!
Susan

Greetings from perhaps a cousin in MD via MN by way of CA. My folks are going on search of ancestors and Heng Island this summer. Did you go or do you know anyone who has?

There is more than one location in Norway called Heng and entirely different emigrant families from those.

For example, the reference above to a family tree of the Hengs from Odda, Hordaland, Norway do NOT come from an island.

You need to check before you assume you are linked by family history to any one of them. Especially before you make a long trip.

great information. wasn't aware of that possibility. will most definately look into it! with the name meaning " steep", there are alot of areas that fit that criteria in norway for sure.

Family Oral Tradition, as well as a pretty tight record expanded by a relative take us to the Island but thanks for the comments. A friend years ago provided me with a less "likable" translation for Heng: Henge=Hang? But then I do not speak the language.

that's how i grew up pronouncing it, but i believe i've seen then henge version as a german origin - and i know i'm not german or oriental for that matter.
