FTM 2012 Simplified Interface for Upgraders

it states that if you are upgrading from FTM v16 or earlier ,and the installation of FTM 2012 detects it on your computer, that the new version will display a simplified interface. The obvious next question that arises from that is what the interface is for virgin installations of FTM 2012 and whether the upgrader can display that interface after the installation is complete.

Thanks

Carol,

It's not the program that FTM2012 will see, it's your Family File that FTM2012 will open. You do NOT have to have Version 16 or earlier INSTALLED on your PC. Since FTM2008, if is "sees" a FTW file, Family Tree Maker will make a Back Up, or suggest that you make a back up, of that file, then create a NEW file in the Version of Family Tree Maker that you installed.

"simplified interface"? I don't know what that means. There are some users who would argue that FTM2012 is "simplified". It is a major change from the way you interface with the progam.

FTM2012 looks much like, from what I have seen, it very similar to FTM2011.

Thanks for the clarification about existing database file versus installed FTM software. Really, the question revolved around the simplified user interface that is stated in the link that I provided. Hopefully someone out there will know what it means and fill us in.

Carol,

As far as I can tell, there is very LITTLE difference between FTM2008, FTM2009, FTM2010, FTM2011, and FTM2012. There ARE a number of differences between these an FTM Version 16. I would call them simplified, but there would be others who would disagree with me. Just check the messages on this message board.

What version of Family Tree Maker are you currently using?

Russ

Carol,

From what I have seen, the only major difference between FTM2011 and FTM2012 is the Plan Workspace.

The "simplified interface" feature of FTM 2012 Beta never worked in my testing. All one could get was the standard 2008 - 2011 views even though the first file converted was a version 16 file.

Ah, so in even in the beta there were supposed to be different user interfaces. Even though it was beta, how was one SUPPOSED to be able to toggle between the interfaces?

Hi. I don't have 2012 - I have 2010 and 2006. I still prefer to use 2006 at present - I find it easier to use, no doubt due to my having been a FTM user since it's early days.

However, I too was intrigued to read of a 'Simplified Interface for Upgraders' in 2012, hoping it might make 2012 look very like the 2006 version. From what I read, it is simply the standard 2012 interface (similar to 2010) with the left most Index pane shrunk by default (which if you know how, you can easily do yourself) and a new icon to open it again - so whilst helpful for new interface converts I guess, it does not seem to be that big a feature?

yellowdfp,

With the controls on your screen, you can make FTM2012 look like FTM2006. But with far less mouse clicks and many more features.

I have been using this program since Version 3.4 and I think FTM2012 is the best to date.

Oh, there won't be a version 2013.
