Does 2012 Create New File from 2011?

Does FTM2012 take the 2011 file and convert it into a separate, new file? Does FTM2012 still use the same Media folder?

Thanks

silverfox,

As FTM2011 did with FTM2010, YES, FTM2012 will create a New FTM2012 file. When it does, you will be asked to Back Up your FTM2011 file, I suggest you do that.

I don't know if I understand the logic in that, which is why I asked.

If FTM2012 makes a new file from the FTM2011 file, it negates any reason to backup the 2011 file, because the 2011 file automatically is the backup for the 2012 file.

The reason for backing up is presumably to cover the remote possibility that FTM2012 will damage the FTM2011(or other flavour) file during processing.

I'd also recommend that you make a copy of your entire Family Tree Maker folder.

Just in case...

I've just been offered FTM2012 UK upgrade for £20.00. I might buy it, put it to one side and wait for the patches...

In that case you should first make the backup from FTM2011 before install FTM2012... In cast of the remote possibility that the FTM2012 will damage the FTM2011 (or other flavour) file during BACKUP processing.

and you are willing to risk years of work that you put in doing the research and collecting the data to save the couple of minutes that it takes to make the back up.
