My mother's family is from between Saginaw and Bay City-- John Berger was a prominent cheese maker and appointed post-master. He is listed in the history of Bay County, Michigan. They were from Switzerland and came to the U.S.-- one brother stayed in Ohio. He was my mother's grand-father. She had memories of their country store and cheese factory. By the way-- the Reisig family is related as well. My cousin Janet Kesemeyer married Ken Reisig who was related to my Uncle Alvin Haag's wife Carlene-- who was a Reisig.

Its been 13 years since you posted your question, but I saw it today for the first time.

I do not recognize the Theodore Berger or his brother Charlie. However I am related to both Hugo and Eddie Berger. They were my uncles through marriage. My grandmother was Minnie Berger and yes she was Swiss. She was raised and lived in the Nadeau/Carney/Nathan Michigan area. Not sure exactly where the farm was located. The three towns are very close to each other. If you walked through the cemetary at both Nadeau and Carney you would see many Berger gravestones.

Minnie Berger married Rollo Steeno and they mover to Niagara Wisconsin. They had four children, one was my father.

In the 1940's Hugo and Eddie were apartment managers in Chicago. However, they both returned and bought farms in the Nathan area - about 7 miles from Carney/Nadeau. I spent two weeks at my uncle Eddies farm. He raised milk cows. The farm still exists and is owned by a man from Green Bay. He raises x-mas trees.

I have been to a number of Steeno/Berger family outings and can say that both Hugo and Eddie really enjoyed having a good time. Played a lot of horseshoes and cards. They enjoyed a good laugh..

The last time I saw Hugo and Eddie was at a Berger family reunion in Carney. Must have been over 50 people.

John Berger was a cheese maker-- they had a cheese factory in Bay County and a general store near Amelith (I believe). They were my mother's grandparents. Mom was Viola Haag (Koenig). Mom had two sisters-- Florence, and Lydia, a brother who died as a teenager named Herbert, and a brother Alvin Haag. Aunt Florence's daughter (my cousin) Janet married Ken Reisig-- but the Reisig family was already part of the family through my Uncle Alvin's wife-- Carlene (Reisig) Haag. Uncle Alvin and Aunt Carlene didn't have children.

There is a nice article on John Berger (available on-line) from History of Bay County. It talks about the cheese factory and the store-- and that John Berger was the postmaster (ostensibly at the general store).
