A 1908 Confederate pension application gave Annis Sawyer Goyne Ward's residence as the "town of Rugg" in Union Parish. Does anyone know where this was located?

There is a community called Ruggs Bluff in Union Parish, LA. The location is directly beside of Point, LA. D'arbone Spillway is very close to this location, Ruggs Bluff has a cemetary also.

I didn't know that her middle name was 'America'. In fact, I didn't know she had a middle name. Have you any additional information on her? I'm connected to both of her husbands.

She was the daughter of Samuel Sawyer and Elizabeth Benjamin Taylor. I have addition data on her Taylor ancestry, but not the Sawyer side.

Thanks,

Tim

I am very sorry. I answered this morning without looking at my records. According to information I was sent, Annis Sawyer Goyne Ward was the SISTER to Samuel Sawyer who married Elizabeth Benjamin Taylor, not the daughter. Her death certificate gives her dates as (29 Apr 1828 – 6 Apr 1919). She first married to Hiram Davis Goyne, Jr. on 17 Dec 1854. He died while serving in the Confederate army, just a few days prior to the Battle of Shiloh in April 1862. Annis remarried on 4 May 1870 to Elijah Hubbard Ward. She was buried in the Rocky Branch Cemetery.

OK, Annis America, born 29 Apr 1828 to Willis and Mary R McQueen. Some of their children put an S on the end of Sawyer and I have been trying to find if Sawyers are a different line altogether. Every body seems to think it is one and the same line. Willis was born in SC and is in the 1810 and 1820 census, then moved to Lowndes Co, AL in 1830 and 40 census. He died in 1855, but I have not located him in the 1850 census. He died in Union Parish, LA.
I see that 2 of Willis' children married into the Taylor family.

Hello,

Rugg's Bluff is a small community found south/southwest of Ruston, LA, where the present college is Louisiana Polytechnic University or commonly as Louisiana Tech is located.
I was contacted about 4 years ago by a Rugg from there to follow up by tracing their ancestors. This Union Parish Rugg family migrated from Solomon Rugg in Lancaster, MA to Southington, Connecticut to South Carolina to Alabama crossing Mississippi and finally stopping in Union Parish. If I remember correctly, Solomon Rugg Sr is a great grandson or great great grandson of John Rugg Junior, son of John Rugge who owned tracts of land(s) in Barbadoes before leaving Barbadoes for Massachusetts to live and marry his first wife Martha Prescott. Her Father founded the town of Lancaster, MA.

I've been working on a history of Rugg's Bluff and will be posting updates and info on a blog at http://ruggsbluff.wordpress.com.
