I have been trying to trace ancestors back to Pommern. I was lucky to find an obituary that said this ancestor was from Belgard, Germany. I was so excited thinking this really would help! But now after looking on the internet for Belgard, Pommern, I am more confused than ever. Belgard could be the town or the county. How will I ever know? What did they most likely mean when they wrote that obituary? Did most people say the county they were from or the city?
Her name was Johanna Heck (Hoeck/Haeck/Hock) She married Edward Steinhaus. She was born in 1855. Her husband died in 1884 and she and two sons immigrated to Chaska, MN, USA. She then married Julius Yanka and had 8 children.

I would really appreciate any help anyone can give me to get me on the right track here! Thanks!
