I am looking for ancestral information on Mary (Marija) Celigoj b. c 1899 in Trieste. She emigrated to America at age 19 leaving family behind. She left a son, Miko?, who was raised by a sister. We think her mother was a Bevic.
Any information appreciated.

I have to wonder if you are talking about my grandmother who married Frank Celigoj (later americanized to Chaligoj) both my grandparents were Austrian My Grandfathers main language was slovenian they were married in the pickens wv area and had 7 sons and 1 daughter 2 of the sons died as small children and are buried in pickens wv my grandmother passed on a few years later at an early age and is buried in Buchannon Wv I beleive her grave has been moved to the city cemetery when the interstate was built shortly after her death my grandfather moved his family to doniphan mo away from the coal mines (per my grandmothers last wish) he never remarried and most of the family is in the doniphan mo area (ripley county) unfortunately in my fathers family they did not feel it necessary to relate any substansial information about the past at most they would tell a few trivial stories and when questioned just changed the subject I have seen a picture of my grandmothers gravestone and the spelling is Celigoj on it I also know there are relatives by the name of Bosic ?? in the Buchannon Wv area i beleive one was named John I have also heard the name Kovosic ?? I also know that my grandmother given name was Mary not sure how it was spelled my grandfathers english was very broken and hard to understand He passed away in 1974 I was 8 so memories are very scattered my father was the last of their children and passed away in June 2009 but there are many grand and great grandchildren in our family and many of us would like to know something of our history thanks for your time and who knows maybe the strings tie together John S Chaligoj

John,

Could this be your family as found in the 1930 Jordan, Ripley, Missouri? All the children were born in WVA

Name Age
Frank Celigry 53 arr US 1907
Mary Celigry 49 arr US 1908
Frank Celigry 19
Anna Celigry 16
Rudolph Celigry 15
Mike Celigry 12
Tony Celigry 9
Victor Celigry 8

The name is difficult to read but is most likley CELIGOJ not Celigry

Here is a WW I Draft Record

Name: Frank Celigoy
County: Randolph
Residence Pickens
State: West Virginia
Birth Date: 29 Jan 1877
Wife Mary
Employer Ranwood Lumber Co.

There is a Joseph BOZIC found in the 1920 Randolph, Mingo WVA census.... maybe this is the name you have a BOSIC?

Maybe this is the BOZIC connection, which is found in WVA marriage records

Name Age
Joe Bozic 39 arr US 1910
Mary Bozic 30 arr US 1922
Mary Z Bozic 6
Joe E Bozic 5
John Bozic 3 7/12

This Mary CELIGOJ (Maria CELIGOI on the manifest) arr 1922 destination Pickens WVA her next of kin in the old country was her father Giovanni CELIGOJ at P. Bisteriza destination to her uncle Frank CELIGOJ at Pickens WVA

Seems like many of the CELIGOJ in US immigration records come from the region near the Postojna caves (which are fantastic!) Franc or Franz (English Frank) is listed as coming from Adelsberg Austria which is now Postojna Slovenia

Hi John, I'm so sorry I am so long in answering this. Somehow I was not notified of your message until just recently. Yes, this is the same Celigoj family. My husband's grandmother was Mary. She came to Pickens at the age of 19 to work in Frank's boarding house. It is there she met Joe Bozic and they were married. Their son John was my father in law. They kept family details close to the vest. :)
