Please email me with your email address. I have lots of info to share and we may be closely related. I'm, from Columbus.

Peggy:
I will be glad to help you all I can and I would love to have your line off of Hayes Guin. I noticed you put Cheryl in a cc. You and Cheryl both descend from Levi Guin, Sr. She descends from his eldest son Gilbert Deason Guin and you from his youngest, James P. Guin.
I am from another line off of Levi, Sr's brother Asa, Jr., but I am researching all of the Guins of northwest AL, therefore I have some information on your line. I only had your grandparents names and wedding date and nothing more, so anything will be great. I added what you gave me so far to what I am sending.

These are my notes on James. He was the 13th child of Levi and Nancy.
13) JAMES (Jim) P. GUIN (abt. 1843-aft. 1891) Susan E. (?) (b. abt. 1850, d.aft. 1880)
No one seems to know the maiden name of JamesÂ’s wife, Susan E., or when and when they married. They probably married in Fayette or Lamar Counties and both of those court houses burned in 1866.
Jim is missing from the 1860 census along with his parents, his two single sisters and his brother Rasey. Possibly they were living in MS since their oldest child born there around 1866.
They are listed in the Sept. 6, 1870 Sanford Co., AL Census, Lawrence, Big Pond, Pct. 2, (282 b) (24), Household 13. James was 27 and a farmer with a property value of $200/$400. Susan was 20 and born in GA. They had two children, Victoria V. age 4, born in MS and Wm. L., age 1, b. in AL. Also enumerated in the home were James' spinster sisters, Abigail, 39 and Mary, 42, both born in NC. They were next to his brother, Jason who was in Household #14. They are living surrounded by Shaws and that could account for several marriages between the Guins and the Shaws.
They are listed in the June 9, 1880 Lamar Co., AL Census, Beat 1, Township 15, Range 15, (598 b) (28), Household 32/34. James P. was 37 and a farmer b. in AL. Both of his parents were born in NC. Susan E. (can't read age) was b. in GA and her parents in SC. Victory was 13, William was 11, Perry S. was 9, Hillard was 7, Weatherford was 4 and Ella was 10/12 and b. in August. All of the children were b. in AL. Still enumerated with their brother were Mary A., age 52 and Nacaday, age 49, both b. in NC as were their parents. (Computer index code 132-04.gif)
Attorney J. Foy Guin, sought out a juror in Vernon, AL named Guin and the man told him that he was the grandson of James P. Guin and that James was the only son of Levi to be in the CSA. There is, however, some evidence that James' older brother Bartley was a soldier in the CSA and three of BartleyÂ’s
sons were definitely in the CSA.
End of notes.
I saw in a book that your grandpa Hayes' name was Wutherford like the president, but in the census it looked more like Weatherford to me.
I hope this helps some,
Janie

Peggy:
I will be glad to share information with you and was hoping for a trade. It is your turn to help me with your line and then I will help you further. The Guins go back to the 1300's in southern France, off the coast of he Mediterranean. Most recently they were in Edgecomb, England in 1660 when Christopher Columbus Gewin was born. He moved to Nansemond, VA in the 1680's.

All of the answers that have been listed so far are correct as far as they go. The name hasen't always been spelled as it is now. Those who say Alabama is correct after they moved fron South Carolina/North Caroline. The people didn't move from South Carolina to North Carolina the state line moved. Before then the family was in Virginia Where Christopher was the first known member of the family to live in America. One should remember when the family moved not all went some stayed where they were.
The family spelled Gewin at the time they arived in America.
Before then they lived mostly in the British Islands,England, Scotland,Wales and Ireland. Theres books shat state that the royalfamily of wales were the Guin family.
It apears that there were Guins who came to England with William the conqueror in 1066 when he became King of England.
There is records of the Guin family in France, Belguin, Germany, and most of North Europe. In fact the earliest recore I know of the Guin faminly was when the three grandsons of Charlemagne the Emperor of most of Europe in the mid 700 A.D. met to devide his empire in 843. They agreed to meet at Verdun as it was a free city, not controled by any of the three grandsons, to devide the spoils. The City State was controled by a family that was strong and totaly nuteral their name was Guin. I know no earlier time that the Guin Family can be found.
