Surnames: Cole, Stratton
These two names are found within our Cole Family. Nobody in our family knows where "Fertesque" came from but we believe the Vanlora (or Venlora) name came from a lady with the surname of Stratton who was born in Vermont in 1796. If anyone has any information, I would be most grateful

Randy:

My husband's great-great-grandparents. Jacob H. and Mary Holm Stotts, originally from Huron Co., OH, named one of their daughters "Louise Van Lora Stotts."

Jacob was born in 1832 in Huron Co. OH. Mary was born in 1834, but I don't know where yet. They were married in 1853, most likely in the Huron Co., OH area, where they lived until 1860 and where Louise Van Lora Stotts was born on July 3, 1858. Louise Van Lora Stotts was married in Tippecanoe Co., IN to Henry Ward in 1877. She dies in March of 1895 in either Tippecanoe or Benton Co., IN.

I am just starting my research on this family, but it seems as though Mary may have had ties to NY.

I'm sorry that I don't know anything more than this. But Van Lora is such an unusual middle name--when I found your reference I just thought I would let you know...

Thanks very much for writing. Yes it is an unusual name. Folks in those days weren't great spellers so I have no idea if Van Lora is the correct spelling however I have located her grave in Waushara County, Wisconsin and the spelling on her monument is "Venlora". Her maiden name was Stratton and her family originated in Bennington, Vermont. Some info I have come across on the Internet spells her name Venlory...so who knows!!

And who knows, the Tippecanoe Co. clerk may have spelled Louise's middle name incorrectly!
