Looking for relatives of both Jim and Kittie JOHNSON born in St. Francisville around the turn of the century. Jim was the son of Jim and Nancy JOHNSON. Kittie is the daughter of Nellie BUTLER (not sure of father's name). Both descended from former slaves working near Afton Villa.

I see your posting was from 1999, so this may no longer be of interest to you, but Mary Ruoth was my great grandmother Martha Johnson Pope's great grandmother, which I think makes her my great great great (?) grandmother. Likewise with Isaac Johnson. I'd be very grateful to learn about any information you may have about them.

Thank you. Merry Reymond

I would like very much to exchange info with you. I am currently researching the Routh family. One of my collateral kin, Ann "Nancy" Smith, m. Mary Routh's nephew John Routh. I also have quite a bit on the Johnson family but not everything posted here. I do not have Mary Johnson, nor do I have lines for Isaac, Caroline, Josephus, William or Martha. I'm particularly interested in Josephus' alleged 1808 marriage to Mary Barrow Lane. Mary Barrow, dtr. of William Barrow Jr. and Olivia Ruffin, m. David Lane and they had 3 children: Olivia Ruffin, William Barrow and Mary Haynes. I show that Mary Haynes was b. 1808 and her father David Lane d. 1812.

I collect information on the Ruffin family.... and would like to add more about Olivia Barrow --

Take a look at what is on there, and see if anything helps you or if you wanted to add any information.

I think you can help me with the Johnson family--I have some of Martha's line down to me--but I'm not sure I can be much help to you, as I know nothing about the Rouths.

Here's some info about Martha:
b. March 1, 1796 Second Creek, Mississippi, d. Feb. 9, 1884
m. Nathaniel Wells Pope, MD., son of John Pope (all I know of him is he was b. in England) Feb. 18, 1823 (As a young man, Nathaniel Wells Pope lived in KY--which I guess was VA then--was sort of a frontiersman, and assisted Audubon in the wilds (he's mentioned a number of times in Audubon's abridged journal, Audubon By Himself).)

Anyway, they had 6 children, Caroline Elizabeth (b. 10/20/1823; d. 1866), Florida (b. 6/17/1825), John Johnson (b. 7/16/1826), Nathaniel Greene (b. 10/30/1827), Mary Jane (b. 9/25/1832, Thompson's Creek, LA), Marshall (also an MD, b. 11/26/1833), and Charles William (b. 8/2/1836).

I have some more data, if you'd like it. Or should I email it to you? I'm a newish member of and don't know how these things are done.

Perhaps someone knows the location of J.P. Smith Cemetery in which Isaac Johnson, Governor of Louisiana, b 1803, d 1853,is buried?

Gov Isaac Johnson, son of John Hunter Johnson, son of Issac Johnson.

Or the location of Troy Plantation? Is it the location of the nuclear plant?

Everything I find says that Johnson was buried at Troy Plantation, which is south of St. Francisville on the road to Baton Rouge. Who was J. P. Smith?

I have just noted this string of emails and am interested in Martha Johnson Pope and her descendants and, in particular, trying to lacate if if exists a copy of her "Reminiscences of the Routh and Johnson Families." I am particularly interested in the portion of her memoirs that deal with Audubon. I also can be contacted at
per page
