Did you find the information you were looking for? My family lived near the Jones family in Duplin and my great-great-great-great grandfather, George Smith married a Nancy Jones from Duplin and they nbamed their son, Jones. There has been a Jones Smith in every generation since.

A number of years ago my uncle started tracing our branch of the Jones family and I picked up the search a few months ago. Most of our Jones branch settled in Laurens Co. (Dublin) GA, but according to his notes (which I have not verified)my 3xgreat grandfather (GGF) (John Jones) was born in Duplin Co, NC 1785-90 and married Ann ___. Their son John (my 2xGGF) was born in 1816. According to the notes the family moved to FL and the second son Tillman A. (Till) was born there. John and Ann did not like the climate in FL or the hostile indians so they moved to Laurens Co, GA and settled near friends and relatives from Duplin Co, NC In addition to John and Till, John and Ann had 4 other children (BDs and DDs unknown) - Nancy G., Hezekiah, Thomas and Malinda. John (my 3xGGF) died in Laurens Co, GA 1846-7. My uncle (who is deceased) believe that 3xGGF John's father was named John. Is it possible that my 4xGGF was John Ivy Jones?

I have been a delinquent searcher when it comes to the boards. John Ivey Jones did not have any sons that moved to Georgia. My mother is a Jones and I know the family well. I have been able to find out that his father was Zachariah Jones and died during the Civil War. He had two sons by Barbara Sumner. (John Ivey and Martin) I beleive but cannot prove that Zach's father was a John Jones living the late 1700's and early 1800's in Duplin County. He was in the revolutionary War and is probably related to all the Jones' from that time forward. John Jones was in the Revolutionary War and served from Duplin County at the same time Thomas Kennedy did. Since both are direct relatives and the two families are married in many directions from that time forward I beleive this might be you best bet. My grandfather was named Johnnie Merrill Jones. His grandfather was John Ivey Jones. If I am correct in my assumption John Ivey Jones had a grandfather named John Jones that was present in Duplin County during the revolutionary war. I hope that helps you. I have few records on the man enlisted in the Revolutionary War other than his entrance date in the war and a record of ownership of land in Duplin County. I have also found some legal documents with someone by that name involved in court matters & political things during his time. I would then think that Zachariah (1825-1862)and your John Jones (1816-?) were probably brothers. Hope that helps. Let me know if you can find anything more on the subject. Thank you for your reply.

Do you by any chance know any of Nancy Jones' family members. I know about the Smith family and have visited a Smith Family Cemetery in Duplin County. I did find out that Zachariah Jones was John Ivey Jones' father. Zach was born 1825 and died around 1862 during the Civil War. Zachariah Jones was married to Barbara Sumner and they only had two sons prior to his death. I am wondering if Nancy may have been the sister of Zachariah. I have found hints of others that I think may have been siblings but have no paper trail to follow those beliefs. I am trying to find a will from Zachariah's father but have not found one yet. It would have all the siblings listed if I can find it. Happy hunting.

I found some info by searching Nancy Jones at http://www.familysearch.org. This is an LDS church web site that list an ancestral file for Nancy Jones (B 22 Jan 1802, D 20 Jul 1880). The file is listed under Mt Olive, Wayne, NC, but Mt Olive is actually in Duplin. Nancy's parents are listed as Elisha Jones and Catherine Winders. Sibs are listed as Elijah (B ~1798, D 17 Oct 1861), Sara (B ~1800), Jael (B ~1804), Matthew (B ~1806), Mary (B ~1808) and David (B 21 Jul 1792, D 8 Sep 1859). Additional info is listed in the file. Hope this helps.

Thank you so much. I will check on that. I lived in the area you are speaking of for 25 years. To be quite honest, Mount Olive is in Wayne and Duplin County. Depends on where you stand. Real close to the county line. I'm sure you know many similar situations. I will check on the site you are speaking of. Do you know anything about that area?
I would put money on Jael really being Joel. My John Ivey Jones had son named Joel Ivey Jones. This will give me a new lead to follow. Thanks for contacting me. This might be just the lead I have needed!

Glad I could help. I bet you are right about Joel. I never lived in Duplin county, but spent a good deal of time there working with poultry companies. I lived in Raleigh for 20 years ('77-'97) and worked as an extension poultry specialist at N. C. State University. Best Regards.
