Hi Jean,
My McHales were from Ballynahaglish parish, not sure where. I only know the name of my great great great grandmother was Margaret McHale, she died in 1883. I know she had one brother named John and a sister Biddy. I found this online and it´s your John and Honor (nee McHale) Thornton. Ther only Martin Brogan I found is listed below, do you know where Martin Brogan came from? I don´t think there is a connection, hope this helps though.
1901 Census below.
Tawnaghmore Kilbelfad Tirawley Mayo Household Thornton John(40) farmer Honor(40) wife-Mary(10)-Anne(8)-Catherine(7)-Pat(4)-Thomas(2)-Annie(6mo.)
Ballyknock Addergoole Tirawley Mayo Household Brogan Mary(40) farmer/widow James(20)-Mary(17)-Anne(15)-Martin(11)

Also I found these Thorntons in the 1856 Griffith´s valuation.
Thornton Thomas Tawnaghmore Kilbelfad Mayo
Thornton Patrick Tawnaghmore Kilbelfad Mayo
Thornton Ellen Tawnaghmore Kilbelfad Mayo
Thornton Michael Tawnaghmore Kilbelfad Mayo

The Patrick here above is more than likely the father of John who married Honor McHale the others are more than likely his relatives.

Mc Hale Thomas Tawnaghmore Kilbelfad Mayo
Mc Hale Thomas, Jr. Tawnaghmore Kilbelfad Mayo
Mc Hale Patrick Tawnaghmore Kilbelfad Mayo
Mc Hale Michael Tawnaghmore Kilbelfad Mayo
Mc Hale James Tawnaghmore Kilbelfad Mayo
Mc Hale John Tawnaghmore Kilbelfad Mayo
Here are the McHales also from the same area as the Thorntons, so they were neighbouring families.
Ok maybe this is new for you maybe not but hopefully its helpful.

Patrick.

Jean, Ballynahaglish is the civil parish as is Kilbelfad.

If you're looking for RC parish records for Ballynahaglish civil parish and Kilbelfad civil parish, parish records are included in Backs RC parish records. Here's a link to Backs RC parish records including the years covered and where the records can be accessed, some baptismal records are online for some years:
http://www.ireland.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm...

You'll see the microfilm copies of the records are available on order through a LDS Family History Centre with some gaps in the dates of the microfilm records.

There's a transcription of the 1901 County Mayo census online done by volunteers in the US from the census microfilm records and you can search it through this link:
http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census/

Scroll down to the bottom of the page for the search link.

You didn't mention John Thornton's dob nor Honor's nor the dob for their daughter Mary Agnes or her birth location or when she married Martin Brogan and where. Those dates would be very helpful.

Reddington were living). They lived first in Hill Street, Ballina then later moved to Water Lane. No death
records could be found for either of them apart from the on the birth records of their children. In the
Griffith’s valuation of Ireland for Mayo, 1856, there is a John Hope listed as living at John Street, I don’t

Hi Jean,
What I have learned is the ages given on the census returns were usually wrong. In 1901 John and Honor gave their ages as 40, both of them. I do you if you contact the Norht Mayo Heritage centre, you can google them they do have the records for the Kilbelfad parish, it is costly but if you really want to connect the dots then it´s the best way. Find out first by writing with the info you have as to how much it would cost you. As you can see from the info I sent you before both John´s and Honor´s fathers were living in Tawnaghmore. If John was born about 1846 like you said then his father Patrick was probably born about 1818/1820 in which case you wouldn´t get his birth cert as there are no records around for that period. If you read the McHale records I sent from the 1856 Griffiths then you´ll see there is a Thomas sr. and a Thomas jr this usually indicated a father and son relationship between two men. Thomas jr. could be Honor´s father which would mean that her grandfather was also named Thomas. Please let me know if I can help in any other way.

Patrick.

Hi Jean,
I´m not sure exactly what you want me to send again, if its all the info we mentioned earlier then all you have to do is look back over all the old post we have here and you´ll find the info. If you can´t let me know and I´ll forward again. I know what you mean about the money, thats why i decided to post my info on here, it cost me a small fortune over the years researching, so now I want to put that online in the hope it helps someone, and it´s free.
