I have a copy of the OLD History of Goodhue Co. Minnesota by Christian A. Rasmussen (printed 1935). I has information on each township and many local biographies. I also have some information on the descendants of Mons Swanson and Eva Enberg from Spring Garden, Leon Twp., Goodhue Co

I am looking for biographical information regarding my Grandfather, Ole Pederson, who owned a hardware store in Kenyon, Goodhue, MN. He died accidentally while attempting a repair to the towns water system in 1928. There is a
picture and brief description of the event in the publication "I Give You Kenyon" by Harold Severson. I am wondering whether there may be additional information in the publication which you referred to on Roots Web. Ole's
father was Peder J. Urnaes (or Urness, Urnes aka Peter J. Pederson) an Norwegian immigrant who came to Wannamingo in 1871 and later farmed in Cherry Grove. Ole had a brother named Jens, who also farmed in Cherry Grove. I would like to know if Rasmussen covered this time period in his
essay and if so mentioned any of the above names.

Hi Rachel;

What a great thing you are doing in sharing your copy of the OLD History of Goodhue Co.

As you can see by my "Zimmerman Query" of 31 Dec 2000, I've been looking for info on my relatives from that part of the state for a long time. Mostly dead ends.

On the off chance, is there anything in your book on any of the people mentioned in my previous query. Thanking you in advance for any assistance you can give me.

Unfortunately, my book about Goodhue Co. does not contain an index to every surname it contains. There is an Index to Biographical Sketches that lists prominent members of Goodhue Co. I was unable to find any Zimmermans or Smiths in this index. I also read the chapter about Red Wing and didn't find either of these names. Winona is in Winona Co., so the Civil War records would not be in my book. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Good luck in your research.

Any information you can share is greatly appreciated.

This is what I was able to find:

History of Goodhue County, pg. 150 (Goodhue Twp.)
"The first settlement in the township Goodhue was made in 1854 when Francis Yergens and John Mann arrived and staked out claims, built cabins and started to establish their homes in the wilderness. The following year came David Hickock, Hohn Ingebretson, Harry Danielson, Oliver Knutson and Knute Knutson. Mr. Hickock and Mr. Mann each built houses and opened them as hotels and although the population in that immediate vicinity was small, travel through the section was quite heavy and both ventures were deemed successful. In 1856 Peter Easterly arrived and finding that Hickock and Mann had more business than they could attend to, opened another hotel. Some time later Hickock and Mann abandoned their business, but Mr. Easterly maintained his public house for a period of twenty years. A tavern was also maintained for a time by J. V. H. Bailey."

There was not a complete biographical sketch on John Mann or any of his descendants. This is all the information I was able to find, unless you think he may be mentioned in another township. There is not an index to every name in the book, so I have to go by the township I am given.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

Rachel
