I'm proud to say there are african american Tilghman's all along the eastern shore from Virginia up to Cambrige MD. My family hails from Upper Hill MD just south of Westover MD. My grandfather Harold Tilghman known to be from the carolinas married my grandmother Sarah Johnson from New Jersey and they produced ten children. Although most of my research says little about the A.A. Tilghmans, I do beleive the name Tilghman was a slave given name to A.A. working in the fields of the carolinas, virgina, and maryland.

My maternal grandmother was Iva Mae Tilghman originally of Caroline County,Md. She was from a family of seven children. Her father owned a large farm somewhere in that area. She was born in 1886 and when I was small I enjoyed listening to her describe life as it was more than seventy years before I was born. I know that the farm was large, with not only a barn but many out-buildings, and that it was along the water. Her father died in the 1930's after going blind and the farm, long coveted by whites in the area, was lost during the depression. To my knowledge none of my Great uncles had male heirs so the family name is lost in this branch, but I am certain that my great-grandfather must have had sisters and brothers. I don't remember my great-grandfather's first name but his sons were named; George, William. The names of his daughters, in addition to my grandmother, the daughters were; Cecil, Amelia, Zoe and Caroline (who was named after her mother). Aunt Carrie was the family archivist and the family records and most of the family photographs were lost in a fire more than forty years ago. If any of this strikes a chord, please contact me at Delcitia@aol.com

Ken

I am also a Tilghman/Tillman Decendant. We are having alot of difficulty finding information because of the variations in spelling within our own family bible. I do know however that my family has roots in Accomac County Virginia and possibly the eastern shore of Maryland.

In my case the Tillman/Tilghman family married into the Rembert and Purnell families and began a northward migration.

Do you have any information that would assist me in my search?

HELLO, MY NAME IS JAMES TILGHMAN AND MY PATERNAL FAMILY LIVED ON THE EASTERN SHORE OF MARYLAND. THE RECORDS I HAVE FOUND TAKE ME BACK TO ROBERT TILGHMAN, MY GREAT-GRANDFATHER. HIS SON ROBERT TOOK PART OF THE FAMILY TO PHILA., PA. HIS BROTHER JAMES, STAYED IN MARYLAND. THEY LIVED IN AN AREA CALLED "GOULDTOWN" NAMES AFTER MY MATERNAL GRANDMOTHER'S FAMILY. THIS AREA IS A FEW MILES OUTSIDE OF CENTREVILLE, MD.

MY FATHER TOLD ME A LONG TIME AGO THE WE GOT THE NAME TILGHMAN FROM A BEN TILGHMAN. I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO LOCATE ANY RECORD OF HIM OR HIS FAMILY. A COUSIN ONCE TOLD ME THAT WE MIGRATED FROM TALBOT COUNTY.

I LOCATED A WOMAN NAMED GEORGIANA TILGHMAN BUT HAVE HIT A WALL.

ALMOST ALL OF THE MORE SENIOR TILGHMANS IN MY FAMILY ARE DEAD. I HAVE TALKED TO THEM BUT WITHOUT ANY REAL RESULTS.
YOU CAN CONTACT ANYTIME A YOUR CONVIENCE,

TAKE CARE

JAMES T.

I am a Tilghman as well. I THINK my family originated on the Eastern Shore of MD. My branch relocated to Frederick County and Montgomery County. I went only as far back as 1853 for a William Tilghman. He married a Lillian M. That's all I have to go on. But the surname is not very popular with this spelling, I'm venturing to guess they're probably all inter-connected.
