Upgrading Family Tree Maker 2006 to 2012 version

Have happily used FTM 2006 since it came out but having upgraded my old PC to a new laptop with 64GB I find that the 2006 version will not run on new machine. (It still runs on a 32GB laptop)

So am considering buying the FTM2012 version.

Would be very interested in hearing from anyone who has experience of using both versions before I buy.

Many thanks for reading this.
David

First things first, you are using the terms 64GB and 32GB and they should be 64 Bit and 32 Bit.

As for the install of 2006 on a 64 Bit machine, is because it is a 16 Bit program and they (16 Bit Programs) can NOT be installed on a 64 bit machine.

Were you even able to install FTM 2006 on your 64 bit machine, or did you get a error message (at the time of installing) that it cannot be installed when trying to install it?

I'm running version 16 on a 64-bit computer without major issues (only sharing to PDF causes the program to crash, printing to PDF works fine).

On the other hand, 2012 is better than 2006 in many ways but some features are not the same and the program will not run as fast as the old program (screen updaets are slower, reports run much slower, etc.) I would not go back to the older version but use it when needing to look at old files that I do not want to convert to the new format.

If you do not like change, you may not like the new version. I've posted a screen shot of 2010 for your reference (1680 x 1050 screen resolution.) You can see how the screen is laid out, etc. You enter facts for a person on the right hand side pane or in the "Person" tab above.

Sorry, I know very little about bits and things.

No, the programme wouldn't even load/run.

I have over 10 years research that I amassed on the 2006 version and have that all on a USB stick which I will need to transfer onto the new version.

What I would like to find out is how easy the 2012 version is to use and how easy it will be to transfer all the info. o

Many thanks for your reply.

I will need to transfer all the info I have recorded using the 2006 version onto 2012. How easy/difficult do you think that would be?

Transfer of the old file should be relatively easy. Save a copy onto your hard drive after installing the new program. Make sure you keep an intact copy of your original file in case things go wrong.

If you are concerned about the transfer I can check your file for issues if you'd like. I've converted other's files when they were on floppy disks, etc..

FTM 2012 will open any FTM file back to version 5.
It will create a new file with the new file structure and move media to a dedicated folder. I believe that has been true for all the versions 2008 and later.

FTM 2012 runs fine on 64bit Windows 7.

The advise to keep a good copy of the old file in a safe location is good advise. It should not be needed, but better safe than sorry.

Since you have a laptop that is still able to run version 2006, you will be able to compare all your data and identify anything unusual. You should be in great shape.

I am also running FTM16 (16.0.350) on a 64-bit computer. I have 2 issues with it and wonder if you are having the same problems or if there are workarounds:
- it will not print a book
- it will not allow use of web search . . . keeps asking to register and when registration is completed, still keeps asking.

I am running FTM as administrator in compatability mode. Any hints?

Bob,

What version of Windows are you using?

What is the issue with "will not print a book"? Is there an error message? If so, what is it.

Is the Web search a new issue for you?

IMO ... definitely not!! I have several versions of FTM since 2006 ... and none of them can (IMO) hold a candle to the easibility of 2006 ... NONE !!

Just got 2012, and first thing is web search. With 2006, it was simple and easy ... and almost ALWAYS wound up with MUCHO 'hits' for the individual ... usefull or not.

With 2012 ... NONE with Ancestry.com the source.

So once again ... for me .... back to version 2006.

The 'new owner' company should be boycotted for ruining a perfectly good program ... IMO...
