I am doing research on my family. I have found recently that my family name was spelled "stumbris" in lithuania. My grandfather Adam was born in 1909 and my grandmother Helen was born in 1911 her maiden name was Budris. I am having a hard time finding anything. I do know my great grandfathers name on my grandmothers side was Kazimier Budris. I am new at this but would really like to find out more about my heritage. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi -

You can start out by gathering what you do know about your family. Were Adam and Helen the generation that came over from Lithuania, or had it been their parents? Do you know if they had brothers and / or sisters? Yoou can find information by looking up where they lived on the various censuses, who else was in the family, and even who applied for citizenship. Where did they live when they came to the US? A few things to start with...

USA via Canada. Kaze via NY on 9/6/1931. My father was Charles V. Zujus, his siblings where Matthew Zujus and Ona (Lanning) Zujus. All deceased. Would love any more info. This was all I can find. Thanks.

Hi Jennifer -

From my research into the name Zujus, there were two areas in which this rare surname can be found. One was in the Preinai region, and the other (which is where my lineage came) was in the Kaisiadorys (?sp) region near Kaunas. I recall reading that your grandfather was a writer and published a newspaper, and his relations were connected with the Zujus families from Preinai. I have not found a specific connection between the families from the two areas, but given the relative rarity of the surname from a relatively small country, I suspect there may be a connection. An expert on Lithuanian surnames once told be that the name came from a nickname, and depending upon the ultimate origin could mean either one who ruminates on things and acts slowly, or one who moves about quickly and nervously. I suppose depending whether I am on my first or second pot of coffee in the morning, either could fit... ;)

Hi Jennifer,

As far as I know, Matas Zujus, the journalist, was my grandfather's uncle. Currently I am trying to find out more about his family in Marijampole, because my great grandmother Elzbieta Zujute (his sister) also belongs to it.

By the way, I have an old photo of Matas Zujus (sent from the states to his sister), if you are interested.

And all of you, who have lithuanian roots, do not forget that family names differ depending on the gender and on marital status (for women only). E.g. Zujus - Zujuviene or Zujiene (woman married to Zujus)-Zujute (maiden name). This helps if you use the archives.

Hi Ruda -

I know from my research that Matas belonged to the families with the Zujus surname that were from the Preinai region. My Zujus relations were from the neighboring Kaisyadorys region. I have yet to find a connection between these two families who have this uncommon Lithuanain surname. It is possible that any connection may before written records were available. I suppose one means to establish a potential connection in the absence of written records would be through genetic testing, but do not know if Ancestry DNA would be specific enough to accomplish this, nor how much a test sufficiently specific may cost.Thank you for the point that in Lithuanian custom the suffix denotes gender and marital status as compared with the traditional English prefixes (e.g., Mr., Miss, Mrs.).

Labas Vaida -

My more immediate Zujus relations were from the Kaisiadorys region. I know there are others with the Zujus surname from the Preinai region, but am not sure if the families are related or simply share the same surname. By chance, was Kaze Zujiene married to a Matas Zujus and lived in the United States?

Aciu

Hello, I am hoping that someone will see this. I am searching for information regarding my great grandparents. I do not have a living relative to find more information about them. My great grandmother Anastasia (Anatazjia) Zujus was born 18 Apr 1885 in Smilgiai, Kaisiadorys, Lithuania. She immigrated to the US in 1906 and was married to John Krauciunas born 26 Nov 1883 in Lithuania. I am not sure if they were married before or after they immigrated. Their last name was changed to Krafton in the US.
