Are there records containing surnames of those employed through the WPA?

Are there records containing surnames of those employed through the WPA?

Surnames: MILLER
My grandfather, John Edward MILLER (b.ca.1915), of Parkersburg, Wood Co., WV gained employment through the WPA. The story goes that he would go out of the area for work and would then return to wait for the next job. About 1943, he left for work but did not return. I'm trying to find out what happened to him but with a name like John Miller and little information about the man, it's been impossible. If he worked through the WPA, would there be a record of his employment? Any suggestions?

The National Archives houses WPA records but I don't know how much you'd need to know to search them. They're not online, obviously. Maybe first contact someone at the regional archives branch nearest you; explain your question; and see if they have any ideas of which record group would likely contain the information.
