Looking for information on my great-great-great grandfather. He is listed in the censuses in Minnesota as Gunerius and Gunnerius, but his obituary states his first name was Jacob. He was born in Olensaker (Ullensaker?), Norway Oct 12 1846 or 1847. He immigrated to the United States in 1872. Any information would be appreciated.

Was he living in Glendorado Township, Benton County, Minnesota in 1900? If so, his birth is listed as October 1845.

Where are you getting the info for his date of birth from?

Yes. Glendorado Township is where he lived. His obituary lists 1847 as his birth year. His death certificate lists it as 1846. And a lot of the censuses list it as 1845, so I am just trying to be broad. The death certificate and obituary both list the date as October 12th.

It's 12 October 1845 for his date of birth. Save all three of these lines for your Source documentation; the top two lines are the most important since it gives the bibliographic info, context, and a link back to the correct image and if you have any question on handwriting people can scroll back and forth to compare handwriting. This writer's handwriting is rather clear as old records go. The third link only gives anyone else the image without context and without the ability to scroll back and forth. In either case, you should be able to do a "right click, save as" and download the image to your computer.

Last entry on the page. Jacob Gunerius Hansen, born 12 October 1845, baptized at home on 27 December 1845, and the home baptism was confirmed in church on 11 January 1846 [the baptism that counts is the home baptism]. Parents are Inderst [rents a farm] Hans Guldbrandsen of Randby ien/eie [an under-farm of Randby] and Ane [Anne] Hansdatter of Stokker eie [under-farm of Stokker]. The person who performed the home baptism [listed after the godparents] is Olea Amundsdatter of Stokker eie [it's possible she was the midwife]. Written as part of a farm name or a separate suffix, eie/eje/eye means an under-farm or sub-farm of the main farm of the prefix.

Here is the confirmation record [#8] for Jacob Gunerius Hansen Stokker eie [residence, but his location of birth was the same place since the next column lists the location of birth plus date of birth and date of baptism]. Same parents as found in the baptism record, except his father's patronym is spelled Gudbrandsen instead of Guldbrandsen. The next column on the following page tells how he did in his confirmation exam, and the last column is the date of smallpox vaccination.

A betrothal was a binding contract as good as marriage, so it often happened that the couple started "practicing" at marriage before the date of marriage, so to speak; this resulted in many pregnancies before marriage. Since the betrothal was made before Jacob Gunerius Hansen was born, he was considered legitimate.
