Does anyone have information on the Native Americans who resided in the St.Helena Parish or Livingston Parish? I understand that they Choctaws were not recognized in Louisiana, yet, my family has always claimed Native American heritage with the Choctaws'.

During the early years of European exploration (1500’s), 2 new tribes arrived: the Biloxi and the Choctaw.
The Biloxi blended with the Tunica in Northern Louisiana. The Choctaw settled in the Pearl River region (what is now W. Mississippi and Eastern Louisiana (The Florida Parishes). They had a tendency to live near European settlements in small groups, and got along with the Europeans (French) very well initially. The Choctaw had a major influence upon Louisiana (names of places, rivers, etc.). By the 1800’s, many natives had assimilated into the society. *I hope this helps* When I have more time, I will post any other information I might have.

I was wondering if you found any more information after this posting. I am also interested in finding my Native American heritage from Livingston Parish, and how to prove the connection. Thank you for any information you can provide me. Please e-mail me at gail@vims.edu. Bonnie Gail Holloman, Gloucester, VA.

most of the indians being relocated go to the freedmans bureau since the gov moved most tribes they keep very good records of them . my grnd always told us we were also from that tribe. but i do know this choctaw indians own the pearl river casino. if you find your lineage on that choctaw line. on paper. yu could declare your rights. meaning this girl i know her brother did lots of research on their indian lineage. needless to say the foxwoods give them their installment payment to each sibling of their ggrt grnd . 4 million to start. don't give up the us gov owes you that.!!!!

This information on the Choctow Indians helps explains why I cannot find anything about them. My great grandmother's mom was a choctow Indian, but I understood that she was from washington parish (Franklinton, LA) area and then settled in Tangipahoa Parish (near Folsom and Husser, LA). My great grandmother's father was a Cherokee Indian.

Thanks for the info.
