Hi Harold :)

I never thought to look over here on the Shipley board for Thomas Gosnell, yet somehow located your query over here through a search for something else.

Thank you again, for helping me in my search for Thomas.

I currently have Thomas' death as 28 September 1884. I've had several people helping me try to find his gravesite, too. I have been told he is buried in Oella Cemetery in Howard County. One lady went there a few weeks ago to try and photograph the headstone, but was unable to find it.

I am not giving up.

You have been a great help!

Kim :)

Dear Marilyn,

I am new to the Shipley board, with Ellen being my only known Shipley ancestor. Your post has been a great find for me, so I wanted to thank you.

I'm curious though...your source gives no mention of Ellen, the daughter of Ellen and Thomas. She has popped in and out of my documentation, but enough times to feel that there was a daughter Ellen. This Ellen S. Gosnell was born in 1846, after Rachael.

A member here at ancestry.com, emailed me privately about a month ago with the following:

Oella Cemetary - Ellicott City, Howard County

Gosnell

Thomas Gosnelll/ Died/Sept 28, 1884/Aged 73 years, 9 mos& 10 days

Ellen beloved wife of Thomas B. Gosnell/born Oct 28, 1814/Died May 30, 1892

Sacred to the memory of Ellen S. Gosnell. Died March 2, 1889/Aged 43 years & 3 mos.

I'm wondering why Ellen the daughter was often left off the census, as well. Was she ill, I wonder?

In any event, I thank you.

Kim :)

FamilySearch indicates that the Thomas GOSNELL who m. Ellen SHIPLEY was son of Henry. Unfortunately, I don't see anything about Henry in my references. The line from William GOSNELL, who d. 1709, AA Co., MD, is covered in BARNES' "Balto. Co. Families, 1659 - 1759." Because of the name Henry, it is possible that Henry GOSNELL might have been descended from Maurice of William. Maurice GOSNELL m. 29 N 1722, St. Margaret's, AA, MD, Susanna WRIGHT, d/o Henry WRIGHT, who made his will 17 S 1742. Maurice GOSNELL had a son Peter.

Assessment Lists for 1798 indicate several families of Soldiers Delight Hundred, who appear to have descended from William GOSNELL, will pr. 1709.

GOSNELL: Zebediah, pt. "Pleasant Pastures," "Wilmott's Chance," & "William's Folly." [Zeb's will was pr. 29 Aug. 1807. He was of Wm., 2, 1, & will named sons Greenbury, Jas., & Wm.]
Greenberry, pt. "Wilmott's Chance."
Wm., "Addn. to Pleasant Pastures."
Peter, pt. "Gosnell's Camp" & "Grazier's Delight."
Philip, pt. "Three Sisters."
Charles, pt. "Willmott's Chance," "Watson Trust" & resurvey. [William GOSNELL, b. 1727, {s/o Peter who d. 1787} had sons Peter, Philip, & Charles.]

Shipleys of MD, 2002, indicates a long connection between the GOSNELL & SHIPLEY families.

Adam SHIPLEY (ca. 1731 - 1804+, of Charles, Robert, Adam) m. ca. 1752, Anne {Hannah, b. 18 Apr. 1732?} GOSNELL, d/o Peter. On 26 Apr. 1804, Adam & Anne sold parcels of land rcd. from Peter GOSNELL, decd. [WG:82:162]. Peter GOSNELL's will, pr. 17 Apr. 1787, also named dau. Ann SHIPLEY.

Another Peter GOSNELL m. Nancy SHIPLEY (b. 1767, of Adam, Charles, Robert, Adam SHIPLEY).

Aaron GOSNELL m. Elizabeth GILLIS, d/o Rebecca LEAKINS & Portius / Porcius GILLIS (28 F 1779 - 4 Mar. 1872, of Susanna, Saml., Richard, & Adam SHIPLEY).

John Bernard SHIPLEY (21 Je. 1848 - 28 Je. 1906) m. 1 Apr. 1875, MD, Martha Ellen GOSNELL.

Ezekiel SHIPLEY (b. ca. 1849, of Ezekiel, Robert, Adam, Charles, Robert, Adam) m. 20 Apr. 1875, Laura GOSNELL, b. ca. 1851.

Wm. Edward GOSNELL (25 May 1874 - 8 Aug. 1951) m. by 1910, Olga Jane CONAWAY (Emma, Leah, Hanson, Eliz., Susanna, Saml., Richard, Adam). Their twelve children are listed.

Georgia Gertrude GOSNELL m. Roy Columbus CONAWAY (b. 25 Apr. 1891, of Columbus, Ruth, Grove 6, 5, Peter, Uriah, Peter, Adam).

As you see, the Thomas GOSNELL who m. 1834, Ellen SHIPLEY must have been part of the GOSNELL family that kept connecting to SHIPLEY, but I don't have proof.

Thanks for posting the burial data. Ellen, 34, daughter, does appear on the FamilySearch database of the 1880 Census with Thomas & Ellen. Combining that with the burial data should be enough proof to list Ellen as dau/o Thomas & Ellen.

Rrrrrrgh. (just my small frustration).

Marilyn, you are really knowledgeable! How are you able to access all this so quickly?

I am still rather new at all of this researching, and am finding it to be a feast or famine. Last week, I was rather proud of myself for finding the Maryland Archives online, and for locating some useful information there about Upton Shipley Gosnell, and his brother William Henry. I thought for sure, I would learn more about their father Thomas (B.?) Gosnell, and then hopefully some of his ancestry, but it never came to fruition.

Anyway, I will use what you have posted to further my quest!

Thank you so much,
Kim :)
