Bridget Gilligan was born in County Sligo 1810. We have no information regarding her family except that at that time I believe there were only a small clan of Gilligans. She married James Kennedy and emigrated to US with 5 children 1850s. If any of this is consistent with Patrick, I would love to hear from you.

I have a Michael Gilligan who was b abt 1823. his parents were Michael Gilligan and Winefred Kivlehan. There is a good possiblity that he came from Sligo. He came to the US sometime in the 1840's. He settled in Dubuque Co. Iowa and married Mary Cullen. I believe he had at least 2 brothers who may have come with him. The story has come down through the family of someone in NY, but we don't know who or where for sure. There were other Gilligans in Iowa and I believe that a James could be a brother also. I know there was a Julia Gilligan who's picture I saw with small children and it was taken in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Let me know if any of this is familar and I'll go through my notes for more accurate information.

Not at this time. I'll go through my notes to see if I can find anything in the other Gilligans in the Dakotas. Have you checked the 1870 or 1880 census to see if you can find her on it with family? 1880 Soundex if she had younger siblings would be a good place to start. It lists the famlies of anyone with children 10 and under. Check you local LDS (Mormon Church) to see if they have the census you need, or the index books for the 1870.

Let me know what you find.

I know of Kivlehans in Ballymote who are related to Gilligans. I also descend from a Gilligan line who is supposed to be from Sligo. Do you have any further information?

My great great grandfather was John Gilligan born about 1838 in Ballmote County Sligo. He married a Catherine Waldron from Mayo. They came to Liverpool in about 1860 and their descendants live here still. I wonder if Patrick and John were brothers.

Hi
I believe you are speaking of my great grandparents. Bridget and Patrick lived in Rochester ny on Fourth Ave/ st. My grandparents lived with them at first Margaret Gilligan and Albert Bowerman. My grandparents had 3 children- Francis( my dad- Corrine- and Margaret. Margaret was hit by a car when she was 5) Then When my grandmother died my aunt and uncle Leo and Corrine Bowerman moved into the house.. I am 62 and never knew my great grandfather but remember my great grandmother. She was small and I remember being about 5 when she took out her teeth and scared me. I wished I knew her better. I have been looking for many years to see where she was buried and I think I found her in Leroy Ny which is outside of Rochester Ny
